Get Fit Fresno County

Fresno Metro Ministry

Connecting Farmers and Schools
Farmers, students, educators, hunger prevention advocates, and the community recently gathered in Fresno to discuss child nutrition and putting healthy, unprocessed foods on children's plates in schools.  This event was part of a “national day of action” Slow Foods campaign to get 'real food' in schools and builds upon local, statewide and national efforts of reducing obesity.

Fresno County

In Fresno County, the Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program (CCROPP) is working with schools, government officials, health care providers, community members and others to transform environments and establish new and improved policies that support healthy eating and active living.  CCROPP partners have formed community councils in each of the eight San Joaquin Valley counties to help address environmental and policy challenges to healthy eating and physical activity.

In Fresno County, the Get Fit Fresno County Policy Council grew out of a unique collaboration with the Fresno County Department of Public Health, Fresno Metro Ministry, community members and key stakeholders.

The Get Fit Fresno County Policy Council is working towards:

  • Establishing farmers markets, community gardens and markets with fresh foods in low-income neighborhoods.
  • Increasing physical activity and physical education in Fresno schools and after-school programs.
  • Creating or improving parks, sidewalks, and other opportunities for physical exercise throughout Metropolitan Southeast Fresno, including walking trails and bicycle lanes.
  • Supporting healthy food, physical activity policies and breastfeeding policies in the workplace, including government, private enterprises, community organizations and congregations.
  • Promoting “smart growth” strategies to help create healthier communities.
  • Developing a physician/allied health professional program to bring doctors to the community as environmental change advocates.

Get involved!

You can help to create communities that support healthy eating and active living. Together we can create a healthy environment in every Fresno County neighborhood.
