Kings County
Overview of Findings
Low-income rural residents of Kings County face dental care access issues, in particular, transportation. Low-income and uninsured patients must travel to surrounding counties to obtain dental care at Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Centers, or Western Dental clinics.
The Kings County Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) program provides health exams to low-income children. The exams include an oral health assessment, and public health nurses follow up on dental referrals. The Children’s Treatment Program, funded by Prop 99, covers the costs for dental treatment as detected in CHDP oral health assessments. Children’s Treatment Program funding is available to children younger than 19, regardless of citizenship.
One of the challenges of the program that was discussed by key informants was the high turnover rate of staff in the CHDP program. The CHDP program must find bilingual staff to accommodate Spanish-speaking patients.
