Monterey County

Overview of Findings

A number of community organizations collaborate to provide an oral health safety net for low income children in Monterey County.  The Health Department, public school system, and other community non-profits work together to ensure young children receive the oral care they need.

One of the programs involved is Community Oral Health Services of Monterey County.  They offer dental services and education to children ages 0-5 years and pregnant woman.   The program provides dental disease prevention workshops, dental screenings for children, referrals to dental services, and assistance with dental care coverage and insurance enrollment.

Community Oral Health Services has taken a lead role in providing screenings for Oral Health Assessments for children entering the public school system.  Staff attends “Back to School Nights” to screen children, and case managers are assigned to children who need follow-up treatment.  Although a number of schools utilize the program’s services, not all administrators have taken advantage of the program.
