Stanislaus County

Overview of Findings

Key informants from Stanislaus County reported that an issue faced by many low-income families is the lack of providers willing to serve children younger than five years old.  In addition to the few providers who serve young children, there are also few providers in the county who accept Medi-Cal patients.  A key informant also described other barriers to receiving dental care such as transportation and language.

There are two oral health programs in the county that promote oral health among children from low-income families.  The Children’s Dental Disease Prevention program is a school-based program.  Staff from the program visit pre-school to sixth grade classrooms to provide training for teachers, tooth brushes, brush covers, floss, and fluoride tablets to students.  The program also offers sealants to students with parental permission.  Schools are chosen based on certain criteria such as the percentage of students in the reduced/free lunch program and teacher’s interest.

The Head Start program of Stanislaus County provides onsite dental exams as well as education from the Cavity Free curriculum for children, parents and staff.  In addition, families receive assistance with referrals and transportation for appointments.  There is limited funding available for payment of needed dental treatments.

One of the main challenges for oral health programs in Stanislaus County is a decline in funding for oral health programs.  A key informant stated that their program is experiencing a decreasing budget every year and foresees a struggle to sustain the program.  With reduced budgets of school districts and the Stanislaus County Children and Families Commission, oral health programs are in jeopardy of being eliminated.
