Tuolomne County
Overview of Findings
Low-income residents of Tuolumne County face multiple barriers to receiving dental care. Uninsured and underinsured residents have difficulty in accessing affordable dental care. The Federally Qualified Health Clinics in the county are one of the only providers that offers discounted dental services. There are few providers that accept Denti-Cal, and patients who need specialty care must often travel outside the county to receive care.
Smile Keepers is a school-based program that provides education, screenings, and fluoride varnishings to nearly 3,500 children in 160 classes throughout the county. Smile Keepers visits each class two times in the year and children are sent home with reports. Smile Keepers staff follow-up on the children who are 5 years and younger because their treatments are often covered by First 5 funds. In addition, Smile Keepers conducts teacher in-services, provides sealants for students at selected schools, make referrals, and assist families with enrollment in dental insurance programs. The program also offers large community-based dental health education at local hospitals and homeless shelters.
The main challenge for oral health programs in Tuolumne County is funding. Funding sources from the state as well reduced Medi-Cal reimbursements will impact the capacity of programs to serve low-income families of Tuolumne County.
