Health Education Model for Improving Latino Health Access
A Promotor(a) Health Education Model for Improving Latino Health Access in California's Central Valley
The project's goal is to improve access to health care services for low-income Latino families in Fresno County. We hired and trained seventeen (17) experienced, bilingual/bicultural, Hispanic community health workers (CHWs) also known as promotores de salud to help families get connected with affordable health care services. Over 300 families received personalized assistance from the promotores including help with enrolling in public or private health insurance programs such as Medi-Cal, Healthy Families (SCHIP), Medicare, Blue Cross, Health Net and Kaiser Permanente. Promotores also provided education about the importance of having a usual source of care, a primary care doctor, receiving timely medical care and preventive screenings.
