Our Approach
Nearly one in five Americans has some type of disability.
Of the almost 500,000 individuals between the ages of 16 and 64 living in Fresno
County approximately 80,000 have a disability.
Persons with disabilities face medical, educational, social, environmental, recreational, vocational and economic hardships.
Local community professionals from health, education, social service and rehabilitation disciplines are anxious to collaborate to find service delivery, technological and educational solutions to address these unmet needs. The Disability Studies Institute serves as a focal point to promote social, scientific, educational, and attitudinal change.
Our regional approach highlights issues of critical importance for persons with disabilities. Our priorities include research and development, education, training, and community resources.
The Disability Studies Institute embraces the independent living model.
