I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I said--Alan Greenspan

Va Nee L. Van Vleck, Ph.D.

Dr. Van Vleck received her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Iowa; she also holds a M.A. in economics from Columbia University in New York City.  Her research emphases are in applied microeconomics, focusing on issues of labor, health and the health care sector.  Dr. Van Vleck was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Public Health and Alcohol Studies, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), at the Prevention Research Center and the Alcohol Research Group in Berkeley, California.  During the fellowship, Dr. Van Vleck was mentored in the Drug and Alcohol Research Team (DART) in the Division of Research (Northern California), Kaiser Permanente in Oakland.

Dr. Van Vleck’s most recent research has focused on the adverse effects of alcohol abuse on individuals’ incomes and likelihood employment.  Other current areas of research are: employment consequences of regular malt-liquor beer consumption by young adults, particularly among blacks and Hispanics; the consequences of the sizable uninsured population in the San Joaquin Valley on the financial performance and capacity of the region’s health care sector (with a focus on rural hospitals); and the effectiveness of a grassroots drunk-driving abatement program in a Central Valley city and its potential for application in other communities.  She has also published in the area of technological networks and transportation.

Having taught in a wide variety of undergraduate settings, including the University of the Pacific and the University of California-Davis, Dr. Van Vleck is now an Assistant Professor at California State University, Fresno.
