Fresno State Fresno Blood Drives

University Blood Drives. In 1996, at the direction of President John Welty, the university embarked on a significantly increased effort to raise blood donations for the Central California Blood Center. That first year, the university responded to the call for donors by providing over 1,014 pints of blood.  Now, 10 years later, it is apparent that the university community has embraced the need for blood donations.  In the first three blood drives of the 2006-07 academic year, 1,931 donors responded by donating blood.

For the 2008-09 Fresno State Blood Drives the dates are as follows:

  • Tuesdays - September 23,  November 18, February 10 & April 14 (Residence Dining Hall)
  • Wednesdays - September 24, November 19, February 11 & April 15 (USU & Blood Mobile)
  • Thursdays - September 25, November 20, February 12, & April 16 (USU & Blood Mobiles)

These blood drives will be held in 4 locations on campus: the Residence Dining Hall, University Student Union, and Blood Mobiles located at the Peters Business Building, Kremen School of Education and Maple Mall, as noted above.

Why Donate?

  • Roughly 60% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood only 5% actually do.
  • Every three seconds someone is in need of blood.
  • Approximately 32,000 units of blood are used each day in the U.S.
  • One unit is roughly equivalent to one pint.
  • Blood centers often run short of type O and B blood.
  • Shortages of all types of blood occur during the summer and winter holidays.
  • Examples of blood use:
    Automobile accidents
    Bone marrow transplant
    Organ transplant
    Burns
    Heart surgery

Blood Components

  • Blood is often separated into 3 components: Red blood cells, Platelets and Plasma
  • Components may be used together or separately to treat a patient.
  • For example, platelets are given to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and plasma is given to hemophiliacs as a clotting factor etc.
  • Red blood cells can be stored for up to forty-two days.
  • Platelets can be stored only for five days.
  • Frozen plasma can be stored for as long as one year
