COMMUNITY SERVICE STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Whenever a person is involved in some form of service work they have certain rights, or things that they should reasonably expect.  They also have important responsibilities which must be met.  The following will help provide you with information on a volunteer's "Rights and Responsibilities".  For more information, you can view the "Student's Guide to Successful Service-Learning".

It is your right to:

Be assigned a job that is worthwhile and challenging.

Receive the orientation training and supervision necessary to perform assigned duties.

Expect that your efforts have real purpose and contribute to the organization’s mission.

Be provided a safe working environment in which to perform your service.

Receive feedback and evaluation on the work that you perform.

Be treated with respect and as a partner within the organization.

Be kept informed on relevant matters within the organization.

Expect that your time, energy and talents will be well utilized by proper planning, supervision and coordination.

Know who you can contact if problems develop at the worksite.

When appropriate, obtain course credit for the service-learning.

Know how the service work relates to relevant course objectives.

 

It is your responisiblity to:

Abide by the requirements and guidelines of the chosen agency and, where applicable, of the community service-learning course in which you are enrolled.

Turn in all required forms to the agency and/or University at the required times and to meet all deadlines.

Follow campus and organizational policies and procedures, including those related to safety, risk, management, drug, alcohol and tobacco use, and confidentiality.


Not take on more responsibility than you can handle.

Meet all commitments to your agency or to provide notice so alternative arrangements can be made. This includes advance notification of absences or schedule changes.

Perform the tasks assigned to you to the best of your ability.

Provide feedback to your supervisor(s) on ways you might better perform your assigned tasks and/or regarding other talents you may be able to lend to the organization.
Respect those confidences entrusted to you.

Be open-minded and respectful towards co-workers and those being served, and towards opinions shared with you.
