Description: This special Mini-Conference had to be rescheduled due to illness. Now it will take place the week after graduation. This special event will focus on helping faculty to more effectively improve their students' writing abilities in ways that are less burdensome!
Handling the Paper Load: Efficient Yet Effective Ways of Evaluation and Responding to Student Writing Carol Holder, Ph.D., Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Channel Islands, Professor of English (Emerita 2004), Director of Writing in the Disciplines (1979-1999), Director of Faculty Development (Pomona 1990-98, Channel Islands 2002-4), co-author with Andrew Moss, Improving Student Writing: A Guidebook for Faculty in All Disciplines Faculty tell us that they'd assign more writing if they had fewer students and more time to respond to that writing or if they felt more confident about being consistent and helpful in their evaluation of assignments that are graded. Further, some find discouraging the quality of their students' writing, making less enjoyable the time spent grading a set of papers.
However, there are ways that we can greatly improve our efficiency and effectiveness as graders and also provide helpful feedback (that doesn't end up trashed and ignored). Carol Holder will share some of the approaches that faculty in different disciplines have found successful. Participants may also share what they have tried themselves, revealing what has worked and what hasn't. This workshop will be useful to faculty in any discipline, at any rank, full-time or part-time, new faculty as well as those on campus many years.
