Problem-based learning focuses on approaches to and applications of information for addressing disciplinary questions. In most advanced courses there is a certain amount of basic information you expect the students to learn. However, given the rate of generation of new information, it is virtually impossible for anyone to become fully literate in even a single discipline. Consequently educators need to help students learn how to work with the data available for a given situation and to find ways to acquire the new data that is critical and relevant to the problem-solving or question-answering process. PBL helps students develop their understanding of concepts because the immediate need to utilize that information reinforces the learning process.
