Reading Skills
The programs listed below are are taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development (IRD). Reading Readiness Program—Program Level R: For 4-year-olds and Entering Kindergartners
In this program your child will develop the reading readiness skills required to make learning to read easy, enjoyable, and successful. Your son or daughter will be captivated by the beautiful instructional materials and musical audiotapes used to teach alphabet skills and beginning phonics.
Both you and your child will enjoy this class, which features stimulating instruction, great children’s literature, and engaging activities.
Two sessions are available:

Reading Programs for Entering 1st – 5th Graders
These programs teach the essential phonics and comprehension skills required to become a fluent reader. Students also learn the word-attack skills needed for multisyllable words, as well as the advanced comprehension skills required for textbooks and literature.
Mastery of these skills will make reading much easier and more enjoyable, and will greatly increase your child’s confidence in school. Students become fully absorbed in books, and they develop the lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.

Program Level 4: For Entering 4th & 5th Graders

Speed Reading, Comprehension, and Study Skills Program—For Entering 6th – 11th Graders
In these programs, the average student improves reading comprehension one to two whole grade levels, while more than doubling reading speed. Students will learn the best way to improve vocabulary, study textbooks, take notes, and prepare for tests. Learning these skills will make it easier to complete assignments quickly and get better grades, and will help develop successful, motivated students.
Program Level 5: For Entering 6th – 8th Graders
Two sessions available:
- Dates: 5 Sundays • June 12, 19, 26, July 10 & 17; 12 noon – 2:30 p.m.

Program Level 6: For Entering 9th – 11th Graders
Two sessions available:

Speed Reading for Work, School, and Recreation – Program Level 7: For Entering 12th Graders, College Students, and Adults
Students in this program will double their reading speed in textbooks, and triple their speed in easier reading materials. In addition, they will learn comprehension, concentration, and retention techniques that will enable them to remember more, even though they are reading much faster.
Learn the best way to study textbooks, take notes, prepare for tests, and develop vocabulary. Finish school assignments in less time, and get better grades after completing this program. Includes lifetime instruction privilege. Program 7 may be repeated at any time in the future—for free!
