Course Numbering System
1 - 99; 100-199
Lower division courses are numbered 1 – 99 and are designed for first- and second-year students but open to others.
Upper division courses are numbered 100 – 199 and are designed for third-, fourth-, and fifth-year students; enrollment is permitted by second-semester sophomores with adequate preparation who have completed a minimum of 45 units. They are counted as graduate work for students with graduate status and permitted for use on a master’s degree program only with departmental approval.
100G - 199G
Courses numbered 100G – 199G are for graduate students only; designed for use in the first year of two-year master’s degree programs; and provide an intensive combination of material normally offered at the undergraduate level.
299 - 299
Graduate courses are numbered 200 – 299 and are open to holders of baccalaureate degrees and, with prior approval of the instructor, to second-semester seniors with superior preparation and ability; are designed for use on master’s degree programs; and when taught by Extension, count as upper division in master’s degree programs.
Enrollment in 200-series courses is limited to those who have met graduate degree program admission requirements including submission of appropriate GRE/GMAT/MAT scores. Exceptions may only be made by the Graduate Dean. Advanced post-baccalaureate credential students may enroll in no more than six units of 200-series course work prior to submission of GRE/MAT scores. If you are enrolling in a 200-series course, you must be either admitted to a graduate program, or in the case of post-baccalaureate credential students, have submitted GRE or MAT scores by the end of the semester. Students who do not meet this criteria will be barred from enrolling in any further 200-series courses.
PLEASE NOTE: Only 9 units (in a 30-unit program) taken prior to admission to a graduate program, including transfer units and/or units taken through Open University, may be applied towards the master’s degree.
300 - 399
A number of 300 – 399 series courses are offered primarily by Extension and/or in the Summer Session. The courses are designed to meet professional needs that cannot be readily served by established undergraduate and graduate offerings. They assume completion of the bachelor’s degree and/or appropriate professional service and are focused on the problems that enrolled students encounter in their professional service. Although these courses are designed primarily for purposes other than the partial fulfillment of degree and credential requirements, they may, with approval by the department, be applied toward the major. They may be used as part of the 40-unit upper division requirement for the baccalaureate degree and as electives in the fulfillment of the total requirements for a baccalaureate degree and/or credential. They may not be used to meet the requirements of a master’s degree.
These courses may not appear in the Schedule of Courses but can be offered at any time throughout the semester. For a description of any of the 300 – 399 courses, contact the Division of Continuing and Global Education at (559) 278-0333.
It should be noted that in addition to the 300-series courses, upper division courses that are described in the California State University, Fresno General Catalog may also be offered by Extension if a demand exists and if qualified instructors and appropriate instructional facilities are available.
