Boren Awards

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for US undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. We focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to US interests and underrepresented in study abroad. You must be a US citizen and planning to attend a semester or yearlong program to apply.

Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for US undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

Capture The Dream Scholarships

The Single Parent Scholarship - $1,000 per recipient. Available to single parents who are California residents and are either graduating high school seniors or full time undergraduate students enrolled at a two or four-year institution.

The George Geng On Lee Minorities in Leadership Scholarship - $1,000 per recipient. Available to minority students who are California residents and are either graduating high school seniors or full time undergraduate students enrolled at a four-year institution.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Applicants are evaluated based on numerous factors, including academic recognition and awards, campus and community involvement, leadership experiences, and quality and scope of proposed program. Students do not have to be a member to apply.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or English Teaching Assistantships.  Applicants must be a senior graduating from college with a Bachelor’s degree, a recent Bachelor’s degree-recipient, or a Masters or doctoral candidate. Grant lengths and dates vary by country. Please consult the specific country summary for details.

Fund for Education Abroad

FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as undergraduates in US universities/colleges who plan to study abroad for at least four weeks. USAC students may qualify for both the General and Rainbow awards.

Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarship

This scholarship assists members who participate in a study abroad program. At least ten $1,000 awards will be presented each year to undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate members who are currently enrolled in a study abroad program or will be enrolled the academic year immediately following the granting of the award. Golden Key Members are eligible to apply.

Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities

This scholarship program criteria will vary based on the requirements of the funding organization, e.g., specific major, level of study, college/university, region of the country, etc. Scholarship amounts also vary depending on the program, usually ranging from $500 - $2,000 per year.

Global Studies Foundation Grant

This grant is designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad. It provides supplemental funds for American students who are already studying abroad though an official study abroad program through accredited academic institutions. Grants are awarded based on academic merit, program merit, and outreach potential.

Tourism Cares Scholarship Program

Tourism Cares awards roughly $100,000 per year in scholarships and manages an additional $2m. in scholarship funds endowed by many donors and associations. Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students in a Travel, Tourism, or Hospitality program. Scholarships are merit-based.

Region-Specific Scholarships

Freeman-ASIA Program

The Freeman-ASIA Program, generously supported by the Freeman Foundation and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), aims to increase the number of US undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need.  Award amounts vary from $3,000 for a summer program to $5,000 for a semester/quarter program to $7,000 for an academic year program.

Chinese Government Scholarship Program

The Chinese government has been offering scholarships to students in conjunction with the American government’s 100,000 Strong Initiative, which aims to increase the number of American students studying abroad in China to 100,000 in four years. Award amounts vary but may cover part of your overall program costs, and students are granted a monthly allowance of 1400 Yuan. USAC students attending the Chengdu or Shanghai programs are eligible for this award.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major US corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 60-100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship

Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities.

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has an education budget of $1,000,000. The NIAF will award scholarships and grants to outstanding students in the summer of 2010 for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and divided between two groups of students. Scholarship awards range from $2,000-$12,000. Each scholarship award can only cover tuition and university-provided room and board.

BUTEX Scholarship for North American Students

Each year BUTEX awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university. USAC students attending the Brighton, Bristol, London, Reading, or Stirling programs are eligible for this award.

Haifa Scholarships and Financial Aid

The University of Haifa offers scholarships and financial aid for students studying at the University of Haifa in Israel. Some awards include the Presidential Merit, MASA, Zionist, and the American Jewish League among others. Students may be eligible to qualify for multiple scholarships. Financial aid is also available through the University of Haifa.

Scholarship for Study in Denmark – Semester ONLY

The Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarship Corporation will be awarding scholarships to U.S.-based college/university students who will be studying in Denmark for a period of at least one semester. This award will be given to a young person of Danish background or one who has demonstrated a strong interest and commitment to Denmark and "matters Danish.” The application, along with detailed criteria, deadlines and instructions, is available online.

Turkish Coalition of America

The Turkish Coalition of America offers many different scholarships for American minority students planning studies in Turkey. Students must be of Turkish, Armenian, Bosnian, Macedonian, African American, Hispanic, or Native American descent. Award amounts vary depending on the scholarship.
