Application, Deadlines and Acceptance
Application and Deadlines
Students must complete a two-part application process:
- File application for post-baccalaureate admission with the designated fee to the University by March 1. For information on admissions to the University click here. Be sure to indicate "School of Nursing Credential" on the application and use the code number 600.
File official transcripts from all post-baccalaureate schools. You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in the last 60 units; 3.0 GPA in nursing. Note: We recommend that you request official transcripts to be sent directly to your home and that you personally send the sealed transcripts to both the University Admissions Office and the Department of Nursing. This ensures that the transcripts are in fact sent. The nursing department cannot xerox their copies for the admissions office files or vice versa. - File application to the School Nurse Services Credential Program by March 1. To print the application click here. To facilitate the admission process, you must send copies of the following:
- Department application - be sure to sign where indicated.
- Official transcripts (in sealed envelopes) from post-secondary schools. Transcripts must indicate: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from NLN accredited school with cumulative GPA of 3.0. A two year associate RN degree and a baccalaureate degree in another field is acceptable as long as the student takes public health nursing content from an accredited CA University. California State University, Fresno community nurses coursework is offered during the summer online. Students can obtain a qualified preceptor in their own geographical area.
- Completion of statistics and introductory research/theory.
- Three letters of recommendation from employers and/or nursing instructors. See enclosed forms.
- Current California Registered Nurse License.
- California Public Health Nurse Certificate
- California Preliminary Health Services Credential obtained through your County Office of Education. You must have a Preliminary Health Services Credential prior to enrolling in the practicum courses.
- School Audiometrist Certificate (when obtained)

Acceptance
The Program Coordinator will send you a letter of acceptance into the program or notify you of any deficiencies. You will need to make an appointment with the Coordinator for advising/program planning. For distance learners, this may be done as a telephone conference. If you have questions regarding previous coursework which may be equivalent, bring or send transcripts, catalog descriptions, course syllabi, etc. Coursework taken more than 10 years ago will not be accepted.
Selection
Candidates selected for admission will be notified by April 30th. Please read application information carefully. Only complete applications will be reviewed. It is your responsibility to see that all documents are submitted in a timely manner. You must make an advising appointment with the Coordinator upon acceptance into the program.
After acceptance into program
At least one semester prior to taking N186/N187, file for the School Nurse Preliminary Credential at your County Office of Education, School of Education and Human Development.

See CSUF catalogue for health/immunization requirements. Student must have current malpractice insurance, CPR certification, and a Preliminary Credential before beginning their practicum courses. Students in the practicum will be required to complete 135 hours in each of the two practicum courses (120 hrs each semester with a preceptor). Upon approval, students currently practicing School Nursing are given 40 hours credit and must complete 80 hrs each semester with a preceptor. The focus of N186 is elementary (K-6, and/or 8 if housed on the same campus), and the focus of N187 is secondary (middle school/ and high school).
At the end of the final semester, after completion of coursework, plan an office visit (or for distance learners, a telephone conference) with the program Coordinator for a final program evaluation and exit interview. A final Evaluation Checklist will be forwarded to the Credential Analyst for processing. Information regarding the Professional Growth requirement for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing will be given to the student. The Commission on Teacher Credentialing will mail your School Nurse Services Credential to you within 6 - 8 months. It must be renewed every 5 years.
