Physical Therapy Education

The Department of Physical Therapy offers an undergraduate pre-Physical Therapy option leading to a B.S. degree in Interdisciplinary Health and Rehabilitation Sciences which meets the pre-professional requirements for the graduate Physical Therapy program. A student applying to become a physical therapist applies to the MPT-DPT Program. The student completes 2 years of study to complete a Master of Physical Therapy degree (MPT), an 18 week full-time postgraduate summer internship, and then continues in the Post-professional joint Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program (9 months). The MPT-DPT program accepts 20-24 students and requires 3 years of study (including clinic assignments during the summer). During the third year of the joint DPT program, courses are held at the University of California, San Francisco (3 courses in Fall Semester scheduled over 6 weekends) and California State University, Fresno (fall and spring semesters with coursework scheduled primarily during evenings and weekends).

The MPT in Physical Therapy is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Interdisciplinary Pre-Health
And Rehabilitation Professions Education

The B.S. degree in Interdisciplinary Health and Rehabilitation Sciences offers pre-professional options in Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Occupational Therapy, and Pre-Public Health. These degree options prepare students to meet the prerequisite requirements of graduate programs in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Public Health.

In addition to the major, a minor in Interdisciplinary Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is recommended for students pursuing career paths in other health and human service professions, such as Nursing, Communicative Disorders, Public Health, Dietetics, Dentistry, Chiropractic, Medicine, Optometry, Clinical Psychology and Counseling.
