Graduate School Application Requirements

Pre-Admission Requirements for Master of Physical Therapy-Doctor of Physical Therapy (MPT-DPT) Program

***Please review all items listed below as some have changed.

To be eligible for admission to the Fresno State's MPT-DPT Program, a student must complete all items below.

The screening committee reviews admission criteria. Prior to admissions to the program, the applicant must:

  1. Hold or be eligible to receive a bachelor's degree by the end of the spring semester prior to admission to the program.
  2. Have completed or be currently enrolled in the specified lower-division prerequisite courses (table shown above) at the time of application. All lower-division courses must be completed by the end of the fall semester prior to admission to the program.
  3. Receive a grade of C or better in each prerequisite course and maintain a minimum total prerequisite GPA of 3.0. (List above)
  4. Take the GRE at least 6-weeks before the application deadline date and arrange for ETS to send your official GRE scores directly to the PT program. Students are encouraged to take the GRE early to avoid delays in acceptance for graduate work.
  5. An overall GPA of 3.0 on all upper-division coursework . CR/NR grades, correspondence courses or independent study courses cannot be used for prerequisite requirements. Only those prerequisite courses completed by the end of the fall semester in which application is made will be counted toward ranking of candidates for selection into the graduate program.
  6. Provide evidence of knowledge of Physical Therapy through employment, volunteer work, or observation (under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist) in a Physical Therapy department for a minimum of 100 hours; fifty (50) hours of which must be in general in-patient care setting.
  7. It is REQUIRED to have all of your observation hours be verified by a licensed physical therapist.

    • Prefered method: Log on to PTCAS to verify your PT observation hours by using the online PT Hours signature process; submit by the application deadline (December 1, 2009 for Fall 2010 applicants). No Exception.

      If needed, the PT Observation Hours paper option is also available on the PTCAS website for signature; send the signed form to PTCAS. (SEE BELOW FOR PTCAS MAILING ADDRESS)
  8. Three (3) letters of recommendation are REQUIRED; one each from a licensed physical therapist and a non-Physical Therapy professor. A complete list of acceptable reference sources is available here.


    • Prefered method: Use the electronic reference process on PTCAS and submit by December 1 deadline.

      If needed, the paper reference option is available on the PTCAS website. An original letter must accompany the reference request form in order to be accepted and must be in a sealed envelope on official institutional or business stationary. (SEE BELOW FOR PTCAS MAILING ADDRESS
  9. Complete a personal essay in response to a standard PTCAS essary question.
  10. Use the "PTCAS Transcript Request Form" to arrange for ALL of your official transcripts to be received in the PTCAS office by the application deadline!
  11. Submit official transcripts from each college and/or university attended to PTCAS by application deadline. Transcripts should be requested prior to the end of the term. Any fall 2009 transcripts must be sent to PTCAS as soon as they are available. Enter your updated fall coursework on your PTCAS application during the Academic Update.

An applicant is invited to participate in a personal interview only if all of the above items are met and submitted by the application deadline. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

PLEASE NOTE: PTCAS will not receive your express package if the suite number is missing from the address, or if it arrives on a weekend or Federal holiday. Express delivery does not guarantee delivery or expedite the processing of your application file.


Meeting the foregoing criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the MPT-DPT program. Students transferring from community colleges and other colleges or universities who meet the foregoing criteria are considered on the same basis as California State University, Fresno students applying for admission to the program. As applicant must meet the above criteria to be considered for conditionally classified standing in the graduate program. Once a student is accepted in the PT program they must also complete the CSU Graduate Division Application through CSU Mentor (www.csumentor.org)


Physical Therapy Application Tips

  1. COMPLETE the GRE exam no later than September 1st!
  2. COMPLETE your 100 observation hours with 50/100 hours in an in-patient setting. Get these hours completed early since hospitals and Physical Therapy clinics can only accomodate a limited number of students. Verification of hours need to be completed when you turn in with your application.
  3. Applications are only accepted once a year and are only available through PT-CAS beginning July 2009.
  4. PTCAS Application deadline is December 1, 2009.
    CSU Graduate Application deadline is November 30, 2009.
