DEADLINE FOR FALL 2010 MSW ADMISSIONS: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2010

The first step in applying to the MSW Program is to initiate an application to the university (Graduate Admissions) at CSU Mentor. This site will provide you with the university (California State University, Fresno) on-line application which you are required to submit prior to accessing and completing the MSW Program application. Both applications are due by the February 5th deadline in order to be considered for the MSW program.

COMPLETING THE UNIVERSITY APPLICATION: This application is an on-line application. NOTE: The mailing address you enter on your university application will be used for any communications regarding your MSW application, including the decision letter. It should correspond to the address on your MSW program application. You must notify the MSW program, in writing, of any address changes (in addition to changing it on your university profile) if you want to avoid misdirected mail.

If you are just applying to the MSW program, you need only:

  • List the names of your references on the university application; the actual reference forms will be included in your MSW application packet.
  • Indicate that you are submitting your statement of purpose in the MSW program application.

If you are making application to other graduate programs that use only the university application, you may need to submit references and a statement to graduate admissions. You should check with the other graduate programs for their guidelines.

ACCESSING THE MSW APPLICATION/REFERENCE FORM FILES:

Once you have completed and filed the university application at CSU Mentor you will be directed to the Social Work Department web site link where you will have access to download the department application and required reference forms.

We advise you to access and download the MSW program application and reference form files to your computer before closing your CSUmentor session. You can then complete the program application at a later time. If you do not download the files at this point, you may have difficulty returning to the web site to access the files.

MSW GRADUATE STUDENT ADVISING FORM

The profession of social work and the Department of Social Work Education are dedicated to meeting the diverse social service needs of special populations of individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. Because we are a practice-oriented profession, the graduates of our program deal with social concerns that range from societal oppression to people's emotional/behavioral problems. The social work practitioner who is educated in our program is taught to help at-risk populations which typically include the poor and homeless, abused/neglected children and adults, people of color, women, recent refugees, chronically mentally ill, developmentally disabled, physically ill or disabled, substance abusers, criminal offenders and the aged. In focusing on disadvantaged groups, the student is trained to use a range of traditional and non-traditional methods to promote well-being, personal growth, and social justice, e.g., individual client and large system policy advocating, brokering, consulting, individual, family and group counseling/ psychotherapy, mediating, researching, supervising and teaching. While the discipline of social work is deeply rooted in a rich, 100-year history of service, what the student as a social worker will "do" is no longer traditionally defined. The role of the social worker is constantly expanding into new and innovative service fields wherever a compassionate response to human need is indicated. Although not limited to the following, the student could typically find employment as a child welfare/protective services worker, alcohol/substance abuse counselor; school social worker, mental health/family services counselor, medical/rehabilitation worker, juvenile/adult justice worker, program developer, agency manager/administrator, volunteer coordinator, employee assistance program coordinator/worker, grass-roots community organizer or legislative advocate.

The master's degree in social work offered by our department is designed to educate advanced social work practitioners who can meet complex client needs within a diversity of public and private human service settings and who can perform in a variety of roles using multiple social work practice methodologies. This course of study prepares the student learner for autonomous social work practice at multiple levels of intervention as well as for doctoral study in social work and related human service arenas.
