Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements
2000-2001 University Catalog (and years after)
Beginning with the 2000-2001 University Catalog, the Department of Communication began a new Bachelor of Arts major, framing the curriculum in terms of competencies and outcomes. The new major features 12 upper-division units in core theoretical and methodological competencies with specialized coursework in personal, public advocacy, and organizational settings. The curriculum provides students with sound preparation for the two most common career paths: (1) post-baccalaureate studies in communication, law and government, teaching, ministry, and other professions; (2) immediate entry into various careers in sales, public service and administration, public relations, and management. All University Catalogues 1999-2000 [and years before]
Catalog Year: Students who attend a California public community college or a California State University campus generally use the University Catalog in effect at the year they began attending. Students may elect to use the Catalog in effect at the time they begin attending California State University, Fresno, or in effect at the time they graduate. For most students who began college studies up to and including the 1999-2000 academic year, this major contains the requirements they will need to complete for their BA degree. [Note: Changing to a later catalog year can cause problems some important ways, such as different General Education requirements.]
The BA major in Communication is build upon a lower-division core of courses to develop basic communication skills and an upper-division core of courses to give a theoretical foundation to the specialized studies on the different tracks . Adaptable to the individual student's educational and career objectives, the major provides three tracks: (a) the professional track for students who intend to pursue graduate educations for careers in such fields as college teaching, law, or the ministry; (b) the organization track for students who intend to enter the professional and business world of work immediately upon graduation from college; and (c) the communication studies track for students desiring a broad liberal arts education.
