Top Dog Dr. Larry Crowder

The College of Science and Mathematics enjoyed a visit by Dr. Larry Crowder, the 2009 recipient of the Fresno State Top Dog award. This recognition is given each year to an outstanding alumnus from the College. Dr. Crowder is the Stephen Toth Professor of Marine Biology at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University. His recent research focuses on marine ecology and fisheries particularly in the arena of endangered species/fisheries conflicts. His work on bycatch in fishing gear has driven national and international policy. As part of his visit to the University, Larry met with graduate students in biology and presented a well attended seminar entitled ‘bycatch of seabirds, marine mammals, and sea turtles in global fisheries’.

Grateful Emeriti Endow a New Scholarship, Dec. 3, 2008

Stan and Fran Ziegler

Dr. Stan Ziegler and his wife Fran recently donated $25,000 that will help chemistry students now and into the future. Their generous gift is a permanent asset to the College of Science and Mathematics. The interest from this account will generate a very nice annual award for a deserving student studying physical chemistry.

When Dean Andrew Rogerson met the Zieglers for lunch to accept their check, Stan explained, “Fran and I both enjoyed great careers at Fresno State and we are truly excited to be able to give something back now that we are retired”.

Fran started working for Fresno State’s Armenian Studies Program in August 1996. She worked as the administrative aide for ten years providing support for both faculty and students. Fran was also an important connection between the program and the community at-large. She responded gracefully to the numerous daily phone-calls which required immediate attention. In short, she was an integral part of the Armenian Studies program until she retired in spring, 2006.

Stan arrived on campus in the fall of 1968 as an assistant professor of chemistry. Over the next three decades he served the College in numerous ways. He held a variety of job titles during his tenure including Department Chair, Associate Dean, Assistant to the Dean, and Acting Dean.

Dr. Ziegler always had a passion for math and science teacher preparation. Stan spent long hours writing grants that were used to bring college educators and local school districts together to increase student achievement through improved teaching methods. Stan championed new collaborations and had a hand in establishing programs like the Summer Science Academy, the Science Mathematics Partnership Program and the Cooperative College School Science Program. These achievements are his greatest legacy.
