Department of Psychology
Swinging our tassel (2017)! For the fourth time in a row, the Department of Psychology was awarded the "Silver Tassel" Award for most enthusiastic attendance at the annual College of Science and Mathematics Convocation Ceremony. The Department of Psychology loves to celebrate the accomplishments of our students! We used our Silver Tassel reward money this Fall by visiting Project Survival Cat Haven, getting close up views of jaguars, leopards, lions, bobcats, and other wild cats!
Congratulations to Dr. Zhanna Bagdasarov, Psychology department’s Alumna of the Year 2017.
Zhanna’s is a true Fresno and Fresno State success story. She immigrated with her family from Uzbekistan when she was a girl. Early on, the family struggled to make ends meet and to adapt to a new language and culture. But adapt they did, and Zhanna eventually graduated from Hoover High School and enrolled at Fresno State. She graduated summa cum laude with her bachelor’s degree in Psychology (with departmental honors) and Armenian Studies in 2005. Two years later she graduated with her master’s degree in General/Experimental Psychology and was chosen as the Graduate Dean’s Medalist for the College of Science and Mathematics. Zhanna earned her doctorate in Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology at the University of Oklahoma. After earning her Ph.D., Zhanna returned to Fresno State, where she is currently an assistant professor of Management in the Craig School of Business. Zhanna conducts research on business ethics and teaches courses on training and development, personnel administration, and nonprofit management.
Phil Kimble Overcoming Adversity Award
This award is named in honor of Phillip Kimble, who taught thousands of Psychology students during his over 20 years at Fresno State. His Well-being Class and Psychology of Disabilities Class, both of which were enormously popular, emphasized the power of the human spirit to openly acknowledge our own and others’ strengths and weaknesses and to live life with empathy and courage. This award goes to a Psychology undergraduate student who has overcome significant adversity in achieving an education.
If you would like to contribute to this Award, or nominate a student, please contact the Department of Psychology, California State University, Fresno, (559) 278-2691.
Western Psychological Association 2016 in Long Beach,CA saw numerous presentations from faculty and students. The fourth annual Fresno State Party at the WPA was a rousing success.
