ECE Faculty Awarded Grants
Dr. Peter Kinman was awarded two grants totaling $170,534 by NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory to conduct research on: Radio Frequency Interference Analysis, and Advanced Transponder/Receiver Design.
Dr. Chung Hoon Lee was awarded a Coleman Foundation Fellowship to develop a course on MEMS and Nanotechnology for Entrepreneurship. Click here for the announcement.
New Tenure Track Position Open for Fall 07
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering seeks a candidate with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and graduate education with a demonstrated ability to develop a research agenda and conduct research in area of expertise, leading to peer-reviewed publications and external funding. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of lecture and laboratory courses for majors in the electrical and computer engineering curriculum with primary emphasis on Embedded Systems and Computer Networking. Additional technical expertise in one or more of the following areas is preferred: Computer Architecture, VLSI, and Advanced Digital Electronics. Click here for more information.

New Faculty in ECE Department
Dr. Christopher Hatfield joins the ECE department after several years of working in the Microwaves industry. Dr. Hatfield earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Dr. Charles Won joins the ECE department after several years of industry and academic research experience. Dr. Won earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Oregon State University. His areas of expertise include Wireless Sensor Networks, and Computer Systems Design. He holds more than twenty patents in these areas. Prior to coming to Fresno State, Dr. Won was a research associate at the University of Nebraska - Omaha.
Dr. Chung Hoon Lee joins the ECE department after several years of industry and research experience in the field of MEMS and Nanotechnology. . Dr. Lee earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Prior to coming to Fresno State, Dr. Lee was a research associate at Columbia University, NY and Cornell University, NY.
Dr. Larry Owens Retirement
After a rewarding career in industry and at Fresno State, Dr. Larry Owens retired from the University. During his tenure at the University, Dr. Owens was instrumental in the development of the BS Degree program in Computer Engineering. He taught several courses in both Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Owens has relocated to Oregon. We wish him the best.
Other Faculty News
Dr. Daniel Bukofzer, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering returned from a leave of absence. Dr. Bukofzer was a Visiting Professor and researcher at the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York during the 2005-06 academic year. He is currently working on a text book on Probability and Stochastic Methods.
Dr. Nagy Bengiamin, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will be on a sabbatical leave during the Fall 2006 semester. He will resume regular duties in Spring 2007.
ECE Department Laboratory Upgrades
As a result of a allocation of $210,000 by the Provost’s Office, the ECE department has begun upgrading several ECE laboratories. All department lab computers have been upgraded. The Optics, Controls and Instrumentation, and Microwaves Labs will all receive new teaching and research hardware and software. Electronics Workbench and Microwaves Office have been acquired to support teaching, learning and research in Electronics, Microwaves, Electromagnetics and Antennas. The Electronics lab will also be upgraded with new oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers. The freshmen design lab has been equipped with new computers, and embedded controllers for robotics. A new milling machine for PCB and microwave circuit design has also been acquired. Upgrades will take place throughout the fall semester as and when equipment arrives.

Grad Expo 2005: November 2nd, 2005: The Division of Graduate Studies at California State University, Fresno will sponsor Grad Expo on Nov. 2 from 2:30 to 7 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union. Grad Expo is a major recruitment event for prospective graduate students. This is a biennial event designed to highlight the university's master's degree programs, the joint doctorate, the Certificates of Advanced Study, credential programs and the advantages of postbaccalaureate education. Currently, more than 3,000 students are enrolled in studies leading to a graduate degree at either the master's or doctoral level, or to the attainment of a credential or a certificate of advanced study.
Faculty from the College of Engineering will be present at the Grad Expo to answer questions from prospective students. For more information visit the Division of Graduate Studies web site. The University is currently accepting applications for Spring 2006. The application period for Spring 2006 has been extended and will close at midnight, November 15, 2005.
Alumni Meeting Held October 28th, 2005: Several ECE alumni visited campus on Friday, October 28th for an inforrmal discussion with ECE faculty members and to reconnect with the University. ECE alumni are contributing effectively to the economy of Central California. Amongst the attendees were engineers from Pelco, Dantel, Federal Aviation Administration, PPG Industries and PG&E. Dr. Ram Nunna, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was an honoree at the 9th Annual Faculty Convocation recognizing Teaching, Research and Service at California State University Fresno. The annual event was held on August 17th, 2005. Eight (one from each of the eight academic schools/colleges) faculty members from across the university were recognized for their contributions to teaching, research and service at the university.
Dr. Nagy Bengiamin, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering spent the Summer of 2005 as a visiting researcher at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Laboratory. His primary responsibility was to develop mathematical modeling and system design methodologies for high temperature testing. The goal was to design an advanced chamber for testing aerospace applications materials under typical heating and cooling profiles experienced during flight. He sees ample opportunity for passing on this gained knowledge to students in his systems engineering classes.

New ECE courses in Fall 05: Two new topics courses are being offered in the Fall 05 semester.The first course is ECE 191T (schedule number 79329), Topics in Telecommunications offered by Dr. Larry Owens. The second topics course (schedule number 79650) is titled Math Analysis in Electrical Engineering, and will be taught by Dr. Ghanevati. This course will emphasize modeling and analysis and can be used to satisfy the upper division math elective for EE majors.
