Student Spotlight — "Lyles College of Engineering Officer's Council" Leading By Example!
With classes officially over and the weather nice and sunny outside, the College decided to treat the officers of the various student organizations in the Lyles College of Engineering (LCOE) to a fun day of team-building! Students from the LCOE Officer's Council spent the Thursday morning of “Dead Days” at the E.D.G.E. (Experientially Designed Group Effort) ropes course on the Fresno State campus. The EDGE program is a premiere leadership and personal effectiveness experiential learning activity. This event was the conclusion to a great year of leadership and team building, with the Officer’s Council at the forefront! The Lyles College of Engineering Officer’s Council (LCEOC) has gone through a few changes this year. The first change is the name – formally known as the Engineering Student Joint Council, the group decided to change its name to be more inclusive of all the disciplines of the College. The student group was initially created to be an umbrella student/faculty organization serving the needs of students and providing points of contacts. Representatives from each club/organization, the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Engineering Senator, and students at large in the Lyles College of Engineering comprise the council. LCEOC works in conjunction with the clubs and the College to assist in hosting events and promoting increased participation and communication. Throughout the year, LCEOC assists with programs such as the annual Engineers at the Mall, the Alumni Golf Tournament, along with participating in various professional and leadership-oriented workshops. This year has been a phenomenal year for the organization; the students have displayed a “can do” attitude with every passing event. The year started with a bit of a shake up, with the Officer’s Council losing their newly elected president, Construction Management student Graham Walhberg. At the beginning of the school year Wahlberg was selected as ASI president, leaving his post as the Engineering Senator and Officer’s Councilpresidency to head the ASI Senate. The Council acted quickly and the vacant LCEOC President slot was filled by Jared Lindo, who had recently been selected as Vice President, with Zoraida Martinez, Justin Scroggins, and Julian Grijalva rounding out the Executive board of the Council. Each member of the Executive Board voluntarily signed up for a year of meetings and tasks, and not to mention representing the College at events throughout the year! Among the events that the Officer’s Council helped the College with were: Fall Leadership Retreat and Battle of the Engineers competition; Open House; National Engineers Week activities (e.g. Industry and Club Fair and the weekend long Engineers at the Mall), the 2nd Annual Starlight Gala; along monthly events such as Donuts with the Dean and our Professional Speakers. The LCEOC has really morphed this year into an open student community. Monthly meetings have become a place to actively voice opinions and ideas on how to better the College and its students, in addition to being a place to share events and projects with other majors or organizations. Overall, the Officer’s Council had a great year and its members are not only at the forefront of student leadership within the College, but they also have an attitude of inclusiveness and optimism. We look forward to next year’s officers building on this past year’s achievements and continue to expand the horizons of the Lyles College of Engineering Officer’s Council! |
