Financial Aid

Financial Aid for MFA Students

Each year, the Creative Writing Program (in conjunction with the College of Arts and Humanities and the Academy of American Poets) sponsors the following awards for students:

Scholarships
Andrés Montoya Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship: These scholarships are intended for any Chicano/a student at CSUF who is actively pursuing a career in creative writing and who will be enrolled at the undergraduate or graduate level during the year of the award. Deadline: May 1 of each year. Details and guidelines available at the English Department or by email to: connieh@csufresno.edu.

Benck Family Scholarships: The Benck Family Scholarships are awarded to students in poetry writing and journalism in alternate years (no application process).

Lillian Faderman Scholarship: $1,000 scholarship for an entering student in Creative Nonfiction
(awarded by MFA Admissions Committee)

Philip Levine Scholarship: $1,000 scholarship
for an entering student in Poetry (awarded by MFA Admissions Committee)

William Saroyan Scholarship: $1,000 scholarship
for an entering student in Fiction (awrded by MFA Admissions Committee)

Leon S. Peters Graduate Scholarship

Student Prizes

Ernesto Trejo Prize for Poetry (graduate student): $100 Prize for Poetry, partially sponsored by Academy of American Poets
Guidelines for submitting:
Only currently enrolled students at CSUF are eligible to submit. Submit up to five pages of poetry, one story or one essay to Connie Hales, Dept. of English by April 15th. Include name, address, email address, Also indicate which contest(s) you are entering and the program/major in which you are you are currently enrolled. If you have any questions call 278-2553.

Larry Levis Prize for Poetry (undergraduate student): $100 Prize for Poetry, partially sponsored by Academy of American Poets

Other Opportunities

• A one-year tuition waiver may be available for students who are not California residents.

• Students can apply for teaching assistantships in the Department of English and for tutor positions in the English Writing Lab
