Ethics Essay Prize ($500)

The Ethics Essay Prize will go to an outstanding student paper that contributes to our understanding of ethical issues in the world today.

The Honor Society of

Phi Kappa Phi Award ($250)

 

Winning essayists will read their work at the “Voicing Ideas” student philosophy conference: March 19, 2010.  Winning essays will also be published in the California Undergraduate Philosophy Review (www.cupr.org)

The contest is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students from any major at Fresno State.

Suggested Topics

  • Analyze an ethical issue that is of special concern for citizens of California’s Central Valley: water issues, agricultural issues, environmental issues, immigration, poverty, pollution, etc.
  • Analyze ethical issues presented in a work of literature, a film, television show, or other work of art
  • Analyze ethical issues arising in American or Californian politics or business
  • Suggest ways of increasing responsibility, character, and virtue among students and young people

Essays on other topics may also be submitted for consideration.

Criteria

  • Essays should be approximately 3,000 words.
  • Essays should clearly explain and analyze a topic, while arguing persuasively for a thesis.
  • Essays should be elegantly written and present an original point of view.
  • Essays must demonstrate high academic achievement, including appropriate citations and a bibliography
  • The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi award will recognize an outstanding essay that exemplifies academic excellence, with a special emphasis on ethical learning, character, or leadership.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 62 is Fresno State’s recognized campus-wide honor society.  Membership in PKP is open to students of all academic disciplines, who have distinguished themselves in significant ways within their field of study, or through interdisciplinary activity.
