The Henry Madden Library held its ribbon cutting ceremony on February 19, 2009. Hundreds of excited students, faculty, staff and community members joined in the celebration of the long awaited opening.
The $105 million dollar project included a 242,999 square foot addition that replaced the north wing that was build in 1956 and renovation of the 84,921 square foot south wing that was built in 1980. The project was completed through the combined efforts of the University Administration, Facilities Management and Plant Operations, the project general contractor, Swinerton Builders, and the project architect, AC Martin Partners.
The new Madden Library is the largest library in the California State University’s 23-campus system, is the largest academic library between Southern California and Bay Area, and is the largest academic building on campus.
There are many stunning elements to the library. The exterior is a marvel to look upon. Visitors will be awed by the ellipse towering above the entrance with its basket weave design of zinc and wood panels and the stunning glass window curtain wall that faces the peace garden and reflects the beauty of the redesigned garden. When going through the main entrance the ellipse element continues. Visitors should be sure to glance down to see the striking mosaic tile representing one of the basket weave designs of the Table Mountain Rancheria.
The over one million books that comprise the Henry Madden Library collection are back on the shelves and ready for checkout. Visitors to the library will notice some unique differences. One distinctive element is the new compact mobile shelving that allows for the majority of the library collection to be housed within the first two floors of the new north wing. There are 5,195 liner feet of rails for the shelving and over 20 miles of book shelving.
In addition to the numerous study areas that can be found throughout the library, there is also a Starbucks and café seating area located on the second floor of the new wing where one can sit with friends, study, or just enjoy a view of the campus from this central location.
We are all very proud of the Henry Madden Library and hope that all will enjoy it for years to come!
