Early Irish Tune Title Index

First version, May 30, 1999. This addition/ correction version, Nov. 18, 2001. Almost all of the tunes older than 1856 can now be found in Aloys Fleischmann's 'Sources of Irish Traditional Music', (SITM) 2 vols., Garland Publishing, 1998. I intend to include most of the Irish tunes given there, with some additons of some other early copies for tunes, except Carolan's, which have been given by Donal O'Sullivan in 'Carolan: The Life Times and Music of An Irish Harper' (DOSC). I do include some of Carolan's more popular ones, used for songs and dances. The dates given for various publications and MS are often quite wrong in SITM, and they do not distinguish between those given in a publication and their guesses as to the date, so one can't tell which is which. Their guessed dates are almost invariably too early. I have taken some estimated dates for single sheet songs with music from BUCEM, but don't rely on these for great accuracy. The first number between vertical bars, |n|, in any listing is the number of the tune in SITM, and any subsequent ones are earlier versions or copies of the tune. A colon terminates all data from a source. The = sign means that the copies of the tunes equated are for practical purposes the same, and I've relied on SITM for most of these. The = sign implies absolutely nothing about any songs that may have been sung to the tunes equated. I have skipped many of the Scots and English tunes given in SITM, but have included a few favorite ones, but usually only one early copy of it, not all that SITM lists. Several tunes in SITM are not taken directly from the cited source. First editions are usually cited as the source, but the tunes are sometimes taken from later editions. Numbers 207 and 208 aren't in the work of 1701 cited as their source, and both are from a concert of 1716. Many dates in SITM are poorly guessed, so their chronological order is badly out of line at places.
Tunes are here coded differently than previously.
Now coded by stressed note/ keynote/ mode, and there is suficient information to tell how many notes there are in the scale of a tune. See the introduction to the Tune Code file for the present method:

NOTE: Most titles are not crossed referenced alphabetically, so use FIND or SEARCH commands on your browser or word processor to search for keywords in titles not listed in alphabetical order.

The first number k in |k|,|l| is the number in SITM, or |0| if not in SITM and is from another source. The second is SITM's number for an early (usually the earliest) version of the tune, and thats where all the versions of the tune will be found regardless of tune title. There are three tunes called "Johnnie McGill", but no primary title entry of this title. They are all found under other 'primary' titles. (The ||'s around the number assure that the number refers uniquely to a single tune number, and can't be confused with numbers in references or in the tune code.)

Accents in Gaelic words are usually not found in the original sources, and I have not thought it necesary to supply these. Of course the spelling is often atrocious, but that's what we have as the primary data. I have given some 'preferred' titles in English as the alphabetized primary title, because of the wide variation in the source spelling of the Gaelic ones. With the fast FIND and SEARCH commands of a web browser or word processor look for (misspelled) Gaelic titles that way. Cross referencing all the variant spellings of Gaelic titles can fill up an index fast, with little real 'meat' in the index.

I have introduced some early tunes not found in SITM. For those found in other versions or copies in SITM I've given the new copies as |SITM#|a,b,etc|. In this way a search on the SITM number, |n|, will also turn up the additional copies. Awkward notation, but this seems preferable to devising a new number for the additional copy which will be meaningless elsewhere.

known to have been published by Nov, 1742, and not much
earlier. Companion volume, BT2, Twelve English and twelve
Irish Airs, probably published at same time. Titles indexed
below are from 1st book and later reissue of the second book,
from original engraved plates, in Library of Congress. Later
in the 18th century, c 1760, the plates of both books were
re-engraved, and 'Yemon O nock [Ned of the Hill]' was added to
the first volume, and 'Yemoncanoell' dropped. [This may be
just title and not tune change. I failed to check.] There is
a later edition of both volumes together which has a title
something like 48 Scots, Irish and English tunes.
