Ale & Beer have been the national drink of England since the time immemorial.  And many a song has been written about beer.  Here are some of the best:
  • HERE,
    With my beer
    I sit,
    While golden moments flit:
    Alas!
    They pass
    Unheeded by:
    And, as they fly,
    I,
    Being dry,
    Sit, idly sipping here
    My beer.                          [More...]

    [George Arnold, "Beer"]

  • For every wound, a balm.
    For every sorrow, cheer.
    For every storm, a calm.
    For every thirst, a beer.

  • Times are hard,
    And wages are small,
    So drink more beer,
    And fuck them all.

  • Here's to women, beer and song, may none of them be flat.

  • In heaven there is no beer;
    That's why we drink it here.
    And when we're gone from here,
    Our friends will be drinking all the beer.

    This toast is found in various languages.  I heard it sung in German then in English from a polka band at Six Flags over Mid-America on Father's Day 2002.  Here are the German & Norwegian versions:

    In German:

    An Himmel da gibts kein bier;
    Dem trinken vere es hier.
    Und sid vere nixt mer hier,
    Dem trinken dem annen unser bier.

    In Norwegian:

    An himmel er ikke ol;
    Sa ma vi drikke sjol.
    Da vi er bort ifra,
    Den venner skal ha de sa bra.

    You may listen to this toast being sung here.  [Sound file courtesy of Smithsonian's Folkways Recordings.  Buy the cd here.]

  • Glorious! Glorious!
    One keg of beer for the four of us!
    Glory be to God there are no more of us!
    Because the four of us can drink it alone!
