Degree Requirements - Coursework
Every forensic science student, regardless of area of interest, will complete the following core coursework during their first year:
- FBS 205 Fundamentals of Forensic Science
- CRIM 270T - Scientific Evidence in the Courtroom
- CHEM 251 - Forensic Drug Chemistry and Toxicology
- CHEM 252 - Forensic Biochemistry
After completing the core courses students will begin to develop expertise in their area of specialization under the following degree requirements:
- CHEM 291 - Forensic Science Internship
- Approved Elective Courses (9 units)
- CHEM 282 - Forensic Science Seminar
- CHEM 298/299 - Project/Thesis
Forensic Science Internship
Students are required to complete a research internship in a science laboratory (crime laboratory or site approved by program director) consisting of a minimum of 150 hours. Students must pass the appropriate agency’s background investigation. Current crime laboratory employees may fulfill this requirement with a significant research project approved by the program director.
Thesis or Project
Students must complete a thesis or project that complies with University standards and an oral defense of that thesis. The research in support of the thesis or project may include the work begun during the internship experience.
