Joint Bachelor of Science Degree Program in

Environmental Sciences

 

"Employment of Environmental Scientists and Hydrologists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2010" (see Job Outlook by U.S. Department of Labor and environmentalcareer.com).


What is the program about?

• Curriculum developed and courses offered by both faculties.

• Students dually enrolled in UCR and Fresno State.

• After satisfying basic requirements, students are free to take courses from both campuses either in person or via distance learning offerings.

 

What does the “Joint Degree” mean?

• After successful completion of the course of study, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences jointly conferred by the two universities.

• Formally graduate from UC and CSU.

• Both UC and CSU appear on the diploma.

 

How about fees?

• Students pay the student fees of their residence campus only.

• That means students based in Fresno State pay only CSU fees.

• UC fees > CSU fees = great deal !

• Valley students may choose to stay home.

 

What’s the catch?

• Residence requirements:

Minimum 2 quarters at UC Riverside;

Minimum 1 semester at Fresno State.

• While in residence at UC Riverside, students will have to pay UC fees.

 

How can students gain admission as freshmen?

• Satisfy admission requirements of the University of California.

AND

• Satisfy admission requirements of California State University.

• Apply to Fresno State and indicate your major in Environmental Sciences. (You may also apply to UCR).

 

How about community college transfers?

• Transfer students from community colleges must also satisfy the transfer requirements of the University of California AND California State University.

• Current Fresno State students may also apply based on the same requirements.

 

What are the areas of study?

• Four degree options at UC Riverside

1. Natural Science

2. Social Science

3. Soil Science

4. Environmental Toxicology

• Three degree options at Fresno State

1. Earth Science (ES)

2. Life Science (LS)

3. Behavioral, Policy and Health Sciences (BPHS) with the following emphases:

    • Emphasis in Environmental Policy (EP)
    • Emphasis in Environmental Health (EH)
    • Emphasis in Social Behavioral Analysis (SBA)
     

Environmental Health Option

• The Environmental Health Option prepares students for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist (REHS).

 

Curriculum

• General Education programs are interchangeable by agreement.

• Lower-division and upper-division core curriculums of both campuses are designed to be equivalent, and interchangeable.

• 7 degree options all together.

• This arrangement facilitates student transfer between Fresno State and UC Riverside.

• Chemistry - 10 units

• Earth & Environmental Sciences - 8 units

• Mathematics - 4 units

• Physics - 8 units

• Statistics - 3 units

• Social Science - 3 units

 

Courses – Upper-division Core (at Fresno State)

• Environmental Science – 8 units

• Social Science – 3 units Degree options U-D requirements:

• Earth Science – 38 to 41 units

• Life Science – 39 to 46 units
