General Information

Contingent upon the availability of funds, the President of California State University awards two prestigious President's Graduate Scholars Fellowships to new, incoming, first-semester master's degree or Ed.D. students each fall semester. A candidate must be nominated by the graduate faculty consultative group of the graduate degree program to which he/she has applied. The fellowships are awarded on the basis of merit and must be used at CSUF for full-time graduate study. Those nominated should represent the highest ideals and merit with regard to potential to become excellent academic scholars at the graduate level. Programs are encouraged to recruit such students for this award.

Amount of Award

Recipients of the President's Graduate Scholars Fellowship receive $3,500 for their first year of full-time graduate study. A second year of award depends upon maintaining satisfactory progress toward the degree. Each fellow could therefore receive a total of $7,000 under this program.

Nomination Process

The graduate faculty consultative group in each graduate degree program may nominate one superior applicant who plans to begin graduate study at CSUF next fall semester. All nominations should be addressed in writing to Karen Carey, Graduate Dean, Division of Graduate Studies, Thomas Administration Bldg., Room 132 (Mail Stop TA51) by April 10, 2009. Extensive documentation should accompany each nomination. The following criteria should be considered in making a nomination:

  • Nominee's academic record (Obtain and include with your nomination a copy of his/her transcript[s].)

  • Nominee's commitment and individual development in the discipline (as evidenced by quality of senior thesis, publications, presentations at professional meetings, professional practice, performances, etc.)

  • Nominee's contributions to the department, university, and to the surrounding community
(Identify with an asterisk any activities for which the nominee received remuneration.)

  • Faculty opinion and comments (Include letters of recommendation from those who know best the student's work; these should evaluate the importance of the nominee's research, creative promise, career aspirations, etc.)

  • Nominee's personal statement (furnished at the invitation of the program faculty) concerning short-and long-range educational goals

  • Nominees must also have an application for admission to the University on file with Graduate Admissions

Submitting the Nomination

The nomination packet can be submitted stapled or with a paperclip. Do not submit the nomination in the form of a binder, photo album, portfolio or other bound format. Do not use pocket sheet protectors. Do not submit original photos, drawings, newspaper articles, etc. as they cannot be returned.

Selection and Announcement of Awards

A President's Graduate Scholars Fellowship faculty selection committee designated by the University Graduate Committee will review and rank the nominations from the various graduate programs. The names of the top nominees will be forwarded to the Office of the President by the end of the spring semester, 2009. Fellows will receive special recognition at various campus events.
