2004 OUTSTANDING THESIS AWARD The Division of Graduate Studies recognizes
the very fine thesis work being accomplished by its graduate students
through the annual granting of the Outstanding Thesis Award, in the
amount of $1,000. This award also accords a high profile to faculty
mentoring of graduate student research. For 2003-2004, the committee
of emeritus faculty judges selected Victoria’s thesis, War in Chechnya: Responses in Russia and the United States, is a comprehensive exploration of the historical roots of the Chechen conflict, the nature of Russian federalism, and the sociocultural, economic, and leadership factors that led to the outbreak of the war. The depth and range of her work led her as well to examine and chronicle the Chechen wars and the responses to them in Russia and in the United States. Her analysis is important to understanding the implications for Russian democracy and U.S.-Russian relations. The committee of emeritus judges agreed with her advisors that Victoria’s thesis impressively dealt with the conflict in an even-handed manner and included a tremendous amount of synthesis, presenting the larger picture of a significant and timely topic of global interest. Victoria plans to continue her education here at Fresno State, where she will pursue a doctorate in Educational Leadership.
