Department of Computer Science
M.S. in Computer Science
Dr. Todd Wilson, Department Chair
Dr. Shigeko Seki, Graduate Program Coordinator
Developments in computer science and technology have more implications for society than ever before. Examples are the unprecedented popularity of the Internet and, interactive multimedia and virtual reality systems that involve users directly in the computing experience. The marketplace shows that the success of new technology often depends on its accessibility to casual users.
California State University, Fresno offers a 30-unit Master of Science degree having strong theoretical and practical orientations. The objective of the program is to provide classroom and research experience to equip graduates for software and system development careers. The program also prepares students for further study and research in doctoral programs.
The Students
The program has a rich mix of students from the United States and foreign countries. Students have come from China, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Norway, Taiwan, and Thailand, with the majority from the Pacific Rim countries. Our graduate program is one of the most ethnically diverse anywhere.
An important feature of our program is the acceptance of students whose undergraduate work is not in computer science. A significant number of students with undergraduate degrees in business, engineering, science, or mathematics have successfully completed our graduate program. We seek students who exhibit a strong desire to pursue careers in computer science and who have demonstrated, through their undergraduate work, their intellectual ability.
Types of Support
To help our students through their graduate studies, local business and industry offer opportunities of part-time employment or internships that provide more than just financial gain. Students learn the logistics of the marketplace and gain hands-on technological experience in the field. The faculty also collaborates with local IT industry, ally academic institutes, K-12 schools, and nonprofit organizations on various projects and activities.
The department offers a number of graduate teaching assistantships. Instructional and research grants have been awarded by the National Science Foundations and others. Students have opportunities of working with faculty on various research projects.
Graduate students have access to contemporary equipment, including networked PCs, UNIX workstations, and robotics.
