Graduate Program in Kinesiology

The master's degree program in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Fresno offers advanced study designed to enhance professional competency and research in pedagogy, sport administration, sport psychology, or exercise science. The program is marked by a commitment to excellence in teaching, leadership, and research. The overall objective of our program is to create an environment that emphasizes high academic standards, a spirit of enquiry, and the personal and professional development of our students.

Master's in Kinesiology

Students whose interests lie in pedagogy most frequently select the MA in Kinesiology. Elective choices within this course of study allow students to focus on individual professional interests and/or needs. Public school or community college teachers will find this course of study most interesting and rewarding.

Specialization in Sport Administration
The specialization in Sport Administration meets the needs of those interested in administrative leadership. This specialization includes courses in administration, marketing, accounting and a specialized internship. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of public school or community college teachers interested in becoming department chairs or athletic directors.

Sport Psychology Option
The Sport Psychology Option meets the needs of students interested in the study and application of sport and exercise psychology concepts. The curriculum is designed to meet core competencies listed by the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP). This course of study will prepare students to pursue advanced degrees or employment as coaches, teachers, or trainers.

Exercise Science Option
Students interested in applied research, fitness, wellness and the sport or clinical application of exercise science should select this option. The Department houses a 3,000 square feet Human Performance Lab that has state-of-the art research-grade equipment. Employment as a Graduate Teaching Associate within the Department is available for qualified students. A variety of local internships in the health-related, performance-related and clinical settings are available as well. The course study will prepare students for employment in the fitness/wellness, sports or clinical settings related to exercise science, and/or advanced degrees.

Why an MA in Kinesiology?

For those earning a Master of Arts in Kinesiology degree, the professional opportunities are varied and fulfilling. Graduates with an advanced degree in Kinesiology are in demand in the fields of pedagogy; rehabilitation; fitness training, testing, or management; sport administration; sport psychology; biomechanics; or exercise physiology. Students may find immediate employment with the master's degree or they may choose to work toward a doctoral degree.

Our alumni have used the knowledge and skills acquired during their master's degree studies to meet diverse professional goals. They have furthered their academic preparation as public school teachers; become faculty members at community colleges; organized corporate fitness programs; become Olympic and university strength coaches, nurses, or fitness Directors. Some have earned doctoral degrees and are currently teaching in universities.

Support and Assistance

Teaching associateships (TAs) are available to qualified students with experience in sport, fitness, or related fields. Graduate assistantships (GAs) are available to qualified students. Students may apply for research grants or for financial aid. Courses in the graduate program are offered in the evening to accommodate working professionals.
