Ghia Xiong, M.A., Education -- Counseling and Student Services

Ghia Xiong escaped from Laos with his family and lived in the Ban Vinai refugee camp in Thailand before coming to this country. The family lived in Portland, Ore., before moving to Fresno in 1982. When his father died, Ghia, the eldest child, assumed family responsibilities. He graduates with a 3.94 GPA. He is the recipient of 12 honors, awards and scholarships and worked on a book with English professor Lillian Faderman. He is the project coordinator for the Fresno Center for New Americans and also has served as its health program manager, a substitute teacher for Fresno Unified School District and a lab technician at Children's Hospital Central California. Ghia hopes to become a psychologist and is exploring various doctoral programs.
