Web Site News

Please pass this along to your Webmasters, as there are still some outdated links within department Web pages: URLs for DGS Web pages have changed due to the "Clean Up the Web" project conversion. In nearly every case, the only difference is the suffix changing to ".shtml." Let's fix those dead links! Don't forget up update any of your browser bookmarks, too.

The latest edition of the Thesis Review, showcasing the theses completed in the Summer and Fall 2008, is now available online. It's available through the Thesis Office Web page, <www.csufresno.edu/gradstudies/thesis>

New Graduate Coordinators

We'd like to welcome these new and returning graduate program coordinators:
Anne Rodiek, Animal Science
Rafael Solis, Business Administration (interim)
Kenneth Froelich, Music (interim)

If your program has changed its coordinator recently and the previous coordinator is still listed on our Web site, www.csufresno.edu/gradstudies/narratives/indexmasters.shtml, there is a form for that. To change coordinators, the notification form can be found online here: www.csufresno.edu/gradstudies/forms/forms.shtml#anchorgc.

For more information about the McNair Program, see their Web site: www.csufresno.edu/mcnair.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Graduate Student Recognition Week, May 4-8

Graduate Student Recognition Week, sponsored by the Division of Graduate Studies, is a great opportunity to draw attention to the accomplishments and contributions and needs of graduate students in your program. We encourage each program to plan an event to showcase and honor its graduate students. It can be formal or casual. For example, your department or college/school may want to hold a graduate forum/exhibit featuring graduate students' research or creative work, a round table discussion among fellow students on a specific topic relevant to students in your program, a "meet the graduate students" reception, pizza feast, etc.

The highlight of the week will be the Graduate Research Symposium, May 7, from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Madden Library. Watch your mail and the DGS Web site for details about this event.

UPCOMING AWARD DEADLINES

Graduate Student Research Merit Award

The application deadline for the Graduate Student Research Merit Award is Friday, March 13. Applications are available in the Division of Graduate Studies, Thomas Administration Building, room 132. These $1,000 awards are provided for meritorious graduate student research proposals associated with the thesis/project/dissertation requirement. For more information or to request an application, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.

California Pre-Doctoral Program

The California Pre-Doctoral Program is designed to increase the diversity of the pool from which the CSU draws its faculty. It does so by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Over the past 14 years our selected scholars have entered doctoral programs at highly acclaimed universities throughout the US. Selected students ($2,000) and their faculty sponsor ($1,000) receive funding to travel to doctoral institutions and professional conferences, and for other selected activities that would increase their acceptance into doctoral study.

In an effort to increase the pool of applicants, we will be emailing selected groups of upper division undergraduates and graduate students the program announcement and Web access to the eligibility criteria and application. Applications are available outside the Division of Graduate Studies office or from the CSU Web site: <www.calstate.edu/PreDoc/Application.shtml>. All applications must be submitted to DGS no later than Friday, March 27. If you need an application or further information, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.

President's Graduate Scholars Fellowships

Each academic year, President Welty awards two President's Graduate Scholars Fellowships to entering master's degree or doctoral students. Each program may nominate one Fall 2009 applicant. Scholars receive $3,500 for their first year of full-time graduate study with the possibility of a second-year award. The deadline for nomination is Friday, April 10. For nomination information, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.

University Graduate Medal

Nominations are being sought from the college and school deans and the Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students for the 2009 University Graduate Medalist. A nominee for this recognition must be the candidate selected to receive the College or School Dean's Medal as the outstanding graduate student. Nominations from the deans and the Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students are due in the Division of Graduate Studies office by Thursday, April 16. For further information, contact your dean's office.

Outstanding Thesis Award

The Division of Graduate Studies announces the 19th annual Outstanding Thesis Award, in the amount of $1,000. Each academic college/school is invited to nominate one candidate for the award. Theses submitted in summer and fall of 2008 and spring of 2009 are eligible. Graduate faculty are invited to review potential award nominees from their program, and to submit this nomination to their college or school according to the procedures and deadlines established by their respective college or school dean's office. Nomination packets are available on the Thesis Office Web site <www.csufresno.edu/gradastudies/thesis/ota.shtml>. Nominations from college/school deans are due in the Division of Graduate Studies by Thursday, April 16. Your college/school will have an earlier deadline for determining their nominee. For further information, contact your college/school dean's office or the Thesis Office, 8-2418 or cradke@csufresno.edu.

Thesis advisors, please note: If you have a student completing a thesis in Spring 2009 and feel that the work may be worthy of Outstanding Thesis Award consideration, it is crucial that the thesis be completed and approved by the time nominations are due in your dean's office. The Thesis Office will assist in accelerating the approval of a thesis that may be nominated.

California Graduate Equity Fellowships

Contingent upon the availability of funds, the California Graduate Equity Fellowships with grants up to $4,500 are available for underrepresented graduate students who qualify. This program seeks to increase the diversity of students completing a graduate degree program at California State University, Fresno and encourages continuation on to doctoral programs and consideration of university faculty careers. It provides fellowships for economically disadvantaged graduate students, especially from groups that are underrepresented among graduate degree recipients in their areas of study, and promotes faculty mentoring and research opportunities. The application deadline is Thursday, May 21. For applications or further information, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.
