The Division of Graduate Studies would like to get to know you! We are hosting a reception on Tuesday, March 4, 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Vintage Room (formerly the University Restaurant). All graduate coordinators/directors will need to be prepared to introduce their new faculty members. There will be introductions and a few words from graduate faculty colleagues. Join us for refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there!
Please RSVP to Louise Neal, 8-6174 or lneal. This is important so we don't run out of food!

Full-Day Graduate Recruitment Conference: "GREAT IDEAS for Recruiting Graduate Students"
The Division of Graduate Studies will host a graduate recruitment seminar at the Alice Peters Auditorium from 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. on Friday March 7, 2008. This intensive, one-day workshop for graduate faculty and their support staff will feature Mr. Tom Jackson, president of the Graduate and Professional School Enrollment Management Corporation (GAPSEMC), a professional organization specializing in recruitment strategies for attracting top graduate students. Mr. Jackson will address the particular needs of our university and share proven strategies for making recruitment efforts more effective, even on a limited budget! This one-day seminar is valued at approximately $1,500 but is provided to you absolutely free of charge! As a bonus, programs that are represented the entire day will receive additional funding for recruitment purposes. For further information, contact Marco Diaz, (559) 278-2448 or marcod@csufresno.edu. Registration is required: www.csufresno.edu/gradstudies/forms/registration81recruit.shtml
Graduate Student Recognition Week, April 21-25
Graduate Student Recognition Week, sponsored by the Division of Graduate Studies, is a great opportunity to draw attention to the accomplishments and contributions and needs of graduate students in your program. We encourage each program to plan an event to showcase and honor its graduate students. It can be formal or casual. For example, your department or college/school may want to hold a graduate forum/exhibit featuring graduate students' research or creative work, a round table discussion among fellow students on a specific topic relevant to students in your program, a "meet the graduate students" reception, pizza feast, etc.
The highlight of the week will be a Graduate Student Recognition Expo and Reception, April 23, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Residence Dining Facility, featuring graduate students from across campus and their accomplishments. Watch your email for details about this event.

These $1,000 awards are provided for meritorious graduate student research proposals associated with the thesis/project/dissertation requirement. For more information or to request an application, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.
California Pre-Doctoral Program
The California Pre-Doctoral Program is designed to increase the diversity of the pool from which the CSU draws its faculty. It does so by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Over the past 14 years our selected scholars have entered doctoral programs at highly acclaimed universities throughout the US. Selected students ($2,000) and their faculty sponsor ($1,000) receive funding to travel to doctoral institutions and professional conferences, and for other selected activities that would increase their acceptance into doctoral study.
In an effort to increase the pool of applicants, we will be emailing selected groups of upper division undergraduates and graduate students the program announcement and Web access to the eligibility criteria and application. Applications are available outside the Division of Graduate Studies office or from the CSU Web site: < www.calstate.edu/PreDoc/Application.shtml >. All applications must be submitted to DGS no later than Thursday, March 27. If you need an application or further information, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.
University Graduate Medal
Nominations are being sought from the college and school deans and the Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students for the 2008 University Graduate Medalist. A nominee for this recognition must be the candidate selected to receive the College or School Dean's Medal as the outstanding graduate student. Nominations from the deans and the Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students are due in the Division of Graduate Studies office by Friday, March 28. For further information, contact your dean's office.
Outstanding Thesis Award
The Division of Graduate Studies announces the 19th annual Outstanding Thesis Award, in the amount of $1,000. Each academic college/school is invited to nominate one candidate for the award. Theses submitted in summer and fall of 2007 and spring of 2008 are eligible. Graduate faculty are invited to review potential award nominees from their program, and to submit this nomination to their college or school according to the procedures and deadlines established by their respective college or school dean's office. Nomination packets are available on the Thesis Office Web site <www.csufresno.edu/gradastudies/thesis/ota.shtml>. Nominations from college/school deans are due in the Division of Graduate Studies by Thursday, April 10 . Your college/school will have an earlier deadline for determining their nominee. For further information, contact your college/school dean's office or the Thesis Office, 8-2418 or cradke@csufresno.edu.
Please note: If you have a student completing a thesis in Spring 2008 and feel that the work may be worthy of Outstanding Thesis Award consideration, it is crucial that the thesis be completed and approved by the time nominations are due in your dean's office. The Thesis Office will assist in accelerating the approval of a thesis that may be nominated.
President's Graduate Scholars Fellowships
Each academic year, President Welty awards two President's Graduate Scholars Fellowships to entering master's degree or Ed.D. students. Each program may nominate one Fall 2008 applicant. Scholars receive $3,500 for their first year of full-time graduate study with the possibility of a second-year award. The deadline for nomination is Friday, April 11. For nomination information, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.
California Graduate Equity Fellowships
Contingent upon the availability of funds, the California Graduate Equity Fellowships with grants up to $4,500 are available for underrepresented graduate students who qualify. This program seeks to increase the diversity of students completing a graduate degree program at California State University, Fresno and encourages continuation on to doctoral programs and consideration of university faculty careers. It provides fellowships for economically disadvantaged graduate students, especially from groups that are underrepresented among graduate degree recipients in their areas of study, and promotes faculty mentoring and research opportunities. The application deadline is Friday, June 6 . For applications or further information, contact Louise Neal at 8-6174 or lneal@csufresno.edu.
