YEAR-END EXTRA

The nine 2005 Deans' Graduate Medalists have been selected, congratulations! The University Graduate medalist will be announced Friday evening, May 20, at the Graduate Degree Hooding Ceremony in the Save Mart Center.

In addition to all the master's and doctoral candidates being honored at the ceremony, this year's Outstanding Thesis Award, Eudy International Graduate Student Award, and Provost's Graduate Teaching and Mentoring Award recipients will be celebrated.

MORE GRADUATE STUDENT HONORS AND NOTES

Danielle Ardizzone (M.S., Marine Science) was awarded $2000 through the Lerner-Gray Memorial Fund for Marine Research from American Museum of Natural History.   His research topic was "Use of Bomb Radiocarbon As a Chronometer for Age Validation of Shortfin Mako (Isurus oxyrinchus)."  Danielle also was first place in the Sea Grant Graduate Researcher Poster Competition at the 85th Annual Meeting of the Western Society of Naturalists (WSN) in Rohnert Park.

Tonya Atkins (M.S., Chemistry) is the 2005 College of Science and Mathematics Dean's Medalist and the department's Outstanding Graduate Student.   Tonya has been accepted into the Chemistry Ph.D. program at UC Davis with a full 4-year fellowship!

James Bartram, Daniel Bernard, Ruched Foronda, Mary Husain, Adam Perry, and Judith Scott (M.A., Communication) were awarded travel grants to present papers at the National Communication Association Convention in Chicago.

Daniel Bernard (M.A., Communication) was the recipient of a Robert and Norma Craig Graduate Fellowship ($1000)

Linda Carvalho (M.A., Communication) is the recipient of the department's Community and Department Service Award.

Denise C. Dedini (M.A., Education, option in Curriculum and Instruction) was the Kremen School of Education and Human Development's nominee for the 2005 Outstanding Thesis Award. Denise won the 2004 Teamwork Award from the Dinuba Unified School District, was the coach for top seventh grade math student at the 2004 Tulare County Math Super Bowl, and received the 2002 Teacher of the Year Award from California State Assemblywoman Sarah Reyes.

Mary Husain (M.A., Communication) was the department's and college's Dean's Medalist

Naomi S. Kent (M.A., Education, option in Curriculum and Instruction) received a Graduate Student Research Merit Award, presented at the Central California Research Symposium in Fresno in April 2005, and was the 2nd Place Winner at the CSU Student Research Competition (Graduate Education Division) in Sacramento in April 2005.

Argelia Lara (M.S., Counseling) will begin her Ph.D. program at UCLA in the fall.   

Zachary O'Brien (M.S., Chemistry) has been accepted into the Chemistry Ph.D. program at UCLA with full financial support for tuition and fees.

Adam Perry and Daniel Bernard (M.A., Communication) are co-recipients of the Department of Communication's Gene Anderson's Outstanding Graduate Student Award.

Jamie Rogers and Lisa Gaitero, (M.P.T., Master of Physical Therapy) won first place for the Best Podium Presentation at the Central California Research Symposium in Fresno on April 21 for their research presentation entitled "The Effects of a Group-Structured Balance and Mobility Program for Seniors at Risk for Falls."
