Tips for Reducing Stress

Stress is a Natural Part of Life

  • Don't sweat the small stuff, and cut the big stuff down to size- For example, if you get stressed by heavy traffic, find a different route, join a carpool so you're not always behind the wheel, or leave earlier to avoid the rush.
  • A couple of things about exercise - Regular exercise helps to relax stress-related muscle tension, so keep in mind that you'll feel better physically and mentally after you exercise. Also, if you're about to start an intense exercise program, check with your doctor before you start to be sure your body can handle it.)
  • Have a sense of humor - Laughing is a great way to lower your stress, so when you're feeling stressed about a situation, find something in the situation that you can joke about. (It works... really.)
  • Plan some "YOU" time into each day - Leave a little time to do something for yourself outside of school, work and other commitments. Let yourself unwind. Try doing nothing for a little while. Your body needs it.
  • Talk with someone you trust - Share your problems with a family member, friend, co-worker or counselor. Let them know what's getting to you. Sharing a problem can be like taking a weight off of your shoulders, so reach out.
  • Don't make too many big changes at once - If you just made a big change or are about to make one (like moving away from home, getting married, or starting a new job), wait until you have adjusted before taking on the next big challenge.
  • Be aware of what you eat and drink - Eat regularly and choose foods that are healthy. Keep in mind that a little alcohol, sugar, and/or caffeine can be okay, but too much can make you feel worse. Also, try not to make a habit of drinking alcohol or eating just to relieve stress.
  • Get enough sleep - Your body needs a chance to pull itself together, especially when you are stressed, so stick to a regular bedtime and get enough sleep to feel rested.
  • Set priorities - No one can do it all, especially all at once. So look at what you have to do, list your commitments in order of importance, and then get them done one at a time. Try checking each item off when you finish. (It feels pretty good.)
  • Cooperate - Having to prove that you're "right" can lead to conflict and stress. So try a little give and take when you're working with other people. Cooperating can lead to more satisfying relationships and can make life easier.
  • Practice half-smiling - When you're stressed, turn the corners of your mouth up and smile a half-smile. You'll feel better. Also, notice when other people smile back. That might help you to feel less alone with your situation.
