Peer Nutrition Counselors

The Peer Nutrition Counseling program is designed to provide hands-on nutrition counseling experience for senior level dietetic students at Fresno State. This program is a collaborative effort between the Student Health Center and the Department of Food Science and Nutrition.

Under the supervision of the Registered Dietitian at the Student Health Center, Peer Nutrition Counselors are responsible for the following essential duties:

  • Implement individual and group nutritional counseling to Fresno State students
  • Conduct outreach programs, designed to inform students and staff of nutrition and health services offered at the health center, and serve as a speaker on general nutrition topics
  • Develop printed marketing and health related material for distribution and reference
  • Serve as a resource to the University community regarding nutritional information
  • Refer students to appropriate services as needed
  • Work collaboratively with health center staff, program instructors, and fellow peer nutrition counselors

Students who are selected to volunteer for the Peer Nutrition Counseling program must possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Must be a Fresno State student
  • Interest in applying academic knowledge to helping students achieve better health and wellness
  • Desire to build and improve skills in nutritional assessment, individual and group counseling, public speaking, and marketing of nutritional services
  • Must be a Dietetics major with plans to enroll in Nutrition 156 in fall and Nutrition 157 in spring semesters
  • Able to commit to three hours a week during the fall and spring semesters for meetings, trainings, and to provide services

Recruitment for Peer Nutrition Counselors occurs in the spring semester for the following two semesters.
