Building Academic Literacy Through History

Learning the history of something, whether it is a nation, a subject such as the Civil War, or a person like Susan B. Anthony, is not a passive experience.  It is an activity that requires literacy, and for students who struggle in this regard, the History Project @ Fresno State offers the following strategies:

  • Building literacy through the standards: Planning, Instruction, and Assessment.

  • Functional grammar.

  • Argument and Evidence: Developing analytical writing skills.

  • Deconstructing text to gain historical meaning.

  • Functional linguistics: assisting teachers and students break apart their text to understand underlying meaning and ideas like causality and abstractions.

  • Intensive strategic reading for ELA classes.

This program is designed to provide teachers with the necessary tools to train students to reason, read and write with clarity and structure.
