Chapter 062 Spring 2003 Initiation Held

Fresno, Wednesday April 9 -- Several hundred people gathered at Fresno State tonight to honor students who had qualified for the nation's largest and oldest collegiate honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.

The honor society recognizes academic excellence among college and university students throughout the U.S. The Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society has a long and distinguished history. The society was founded in 1897 and is recognized as one of the two most prestigious national collegiate honor societies (the other being Phi Beta Kappa, which recognizes excellence on only the liberal arts).

The Fresno chapter was established in 1953 and has been honored more than any other chapter in the country for the excellence of its programs for student recognition. The Fresno honor society recognizes academic excellence in all majors both at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Admission to the honor society is by invitation only. Both superior scholarship and good character are criteria for membership. Undergraduate students must either be a second semester junior, completed at least 24 units from Fresno State and be in the top 7.5% of juniors (minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.65), or be a senior and completed at least 24 units from Fresno State, and be in the top 10% of seniors (minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.58). Graduate students must have completed 18 units from Fresno State and be in the top 10% of graduates (minimum overall GPA of 4.0).

In addition to the induction of new student members to the honor society, several other awards given at tonight's event were:

  • DeLynn Bettencourt, an electrical engineering major, was presented as one of the recipients of this year's $8,000 Phi Kappa Phi National Graduate Fellowship.

  • University Artist Award to Helene Joseph-Weil, professor, Department of Music.

  • University Scholar Award to Barbara Owen, professor, Department of Criminology.

  • Special recognition to faculty members Alejandro Calderon-Urrea, professor, Department of Biology, and Ali Peyvandi, professor, Department of Accountancy and Joy D. Covey Chair in International Business.

  • Special recognition to Paul Shaker, dean of the Kremen School of Education and Human Development,  and to Barbara Benedict, Office of Advising Services.

  • Special recognition to alumnus Jack Hannah, professional baseball player, educator, song writer, and performer in his internationally acclaimed singing trio, "The Sons of the San Joaquin."

2003 National Fellowship Winner

Chapter 062 is proud to announce that DeLynn Bettencourt, an electrical engineering major and our chapter Graduate Fellowship Competition nominee for 2003, has been awarded an $8,000 National Fellowship.

All Fresno State undergraduate Phi Kappa Phi members who are preparing for graduation from now through the Fall of 2004 are eligible to apply for a National Fellowship, worth up to $8,000 for the first year of graduate study. Fifty of these $8,000 fellowships are awarded each year, as well as thirty $1,500 Awards of Excellence.  All students entered into the national fellowship competition by the local chapters will receive a free life membership, worth the equivalent of $300. Applications for next years competition, Fellowship 2004, will be available November 1, 2003 and must be received by the chapter before February 1, 2003. Contact Denise Biggert at 278-6535 for more details.

Ms. Bettencourt came to Fresno State four years ago as one of the first cohort of students admitted to the Smittcamp Family Honors College. She chose to major in electrical engineering, based on a long interest in ham radio and after taking a number of electronics/pre-engineering courses at Turlock High School. She has held internships during her tenure at Fresno state at the E & J Gallo Winery, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, and the Berkeley Wireless Research Center. She intends to pursue a Ph.D. in electrical engineering with an emphasis in communications systems and signal processing. Ms. Bettencourt has already been accepted at Stanford, U.C. Berkeley, and Princeton universities. She will be the recipient of the College of Engineering and Computer Science's Dean's Medal when she graduates this May with a 4.0 grade point average. Ms. Bettencourt has also received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Charles LeGeyt Fortescue Fellowship.

Congratulations DeLynn, we are all very proud of your accomplishments.

Juan Serrano Benefit Concert
On March 15th Chapter 062 presented a concert by the world's foremost flamenco guitarist, Juan Serrano. The concert,, "Gypsy Spirit", was for the benefit of the Chapter 062 Scholarship Trust Fund. The perpetual fund provides the resources for student scholarships presented at the Chapter's annual initiation and awards event. The concert, which raised over $5500 for scholarships, was sold out two days prior to the event. Serrano fans from all over the central valley, fortunate enough to obtain tickets, watched as Serrano played solo and in accompaniment with his former student, Len Widjaja. The Spanish Dance Troupe, Alegria Espanola, also performed to several of the evenings offerings. Following the concert, at an informal reception, the performers mingled with the audience and were available for autographing programs. The chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Music, plans to present future concerts featuring the department's world renown and talented faculty. The chapter wishes to express its gratitude to the office staff of the Department of Music who graciously handled the tickets for the event. Click HERE to see photos of the concert.

Andreas Werz Benefit Concert a Success
Wahlberg Hall, on the campus of California State University, Fresno, was hushed in anticipation until Andreas Werz walked onto the stage. The audience burst into applause and the Department of Music's piano maestro took his place at the piano. Each composition played was met with a loud applause by an appreciative audience. Werz showed a wide range of emotion in his playing as he presented Polonaise in C-sharp Minor, Op. 26 No.1Polonaise in A-flat Major, Op. 53, Scherzo in B-flat Minor, Op.31 by Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), Vallee d'Obermann from Annees de Pelerinage: Suisse by Franz Liszt (1811-1886). Following a brief intermission, Werz displayed his power and strength in performing more contemporary works by Marisa Manchado (Metamorfosis, 1989) and Wolfgang Rihm (Piano Piece No. 1, 1970). The concert was to conclude with the familiar Rhapsody in Blue (1924) by George Gershwin. However, after continued standing ovations, Wertz continued with three additional compositions for honcours.

Following the concert, a cookies and punch reception was held for the audience to meet and chat with the performer. All-in-all, the evening was very enjoyable for the audience and a successful fund raising event to support the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 062 Scholarship Trust. All considered the April 10, 2000 concert a success.

Chapter 062 Begins Faculty Recruitment Campaign for 2000
The Fresno State chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has launched, during National Phi Kappa Phi Week, held April 9 through April 15, a new campaign to increase faculty participation in the chapter's efforts to promote and recognize academic excellence achieved by students and by administrators, faculty and staff at the university. The chapter hopes this novel approach will serve as an example for other chapters across the country.

The chapter has been recognized by the Office of Academic Personnel as an officially accepted organization for new probationary, tenure track faculty to receive credit for their required volunteer efforts on behalf of the university. Each new faculty member is required to volunteer  additional time, beyond the hours required for their teaching responsibilities, during their probationary period, to help support the university's many non-teaching activities. Thomas J. Ebert, the Associate Vice President for Academic Personnel approved the recognition and said service to the chapter would be looked at favorably and included in the faculty member's probationary file.

An information packet providing details about the chapter and its activities will be sent to each new hire. Interested new hire, full-time, tenure track, probationary faculty can obtain further information from Denise Biggert, the chapter's secretary, at 278-2823.

Chapter 062 Wins National Phi Kappa Phi Week Competition for 2000
The national office of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has announced that Chapter 062 has won the National Phi Kappa Phi Week Competition. National Phi Kappa Phi Week was recognized this year during the week of April 11 through April 17. During this week, Chapter 062 published the university's web site for Honor Societies active on campus and the chapter's own web site.

The chapter also introduced for the first time its own 8 minute promotional video. The video had its first official chapter use during the Honors Reception at the chapter's Spring 1999 Initiation event. The video will be used to introduce the public and university community to Chapter 062 and Phi Kappa Phi at chapter displays presented at public and university functions, at Phi Kappa Phi regional and national conferences and during other chapter sponsored functions.

The chapter also presented library displays showcasing members who are authors, by displaying published works, and Chapter 062, highlighting its initiation, history, activities, awards and members.

Finally, the chapter played the Phi Kappa Phi Centennial March, written by on of its members, John Marshall Bliss, on the university's Carillon Bells. The chapter arranged with Mr. Bliss for a score to be composed especially for the Fresno State's Carillon Bells.

Next year, Phi Kappa Phi Week will be observed during the week of April 9-15, 2000

Phi Kappa Phi Members Recognized at 1999 Fresno State Commencement
The university will be celebrating its 88th graduation exercises this year.  Graduating Phi Kappa Phi members and administrative, alumni, faculty and staff member participants will be wearing their Society medallions and the graduates will also be wearing their initiation ribbons.  Look for these distinguished individuals and remember the academic excellence they have achieved for themselves and for Fresno State.

Graduating members will also be indicated as Phi Kappa Phi scholars in the commencement program and a description of what it means to be a Phi Kappa Phi scholar will be found under a special heading of "Outstanding Graduates."

1999 Initiation into Membership
On April 20, 199, Chapter 062, of the national Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, held its 87th initiation. Forty-seven graduate students and 184 undergraduate students representing all disciplines at Fresno State were initiated into the Society. To be recognized and invited for membership by the Society, a graduate student must complete their program with distinction, representing a minimum of a 3.90 grade point average, while an undergraduate student must have completed a minimum of 90 units of credit with at least a 3.50 grade point average.

The chapter, to recognize and honor other individuals who have helped to promote academic excellence at Fresno State, and who serve as examples of what the future might hold for the student initiates, also initiated administration members, Robert Monke, Associate Dean of the School of Education and Human Development, and Carol Munshower, Director of the International Student Services and Programs, faculty members, James Highsmith, Professor of Finance and Business Law, and Juan Serrano, Professor of Music, and staff member Robert Fraley, Head Indoor Track Coach.

The event opened with an Honors Reception, with music provided by the university's Brass Quintet, under the direction of Professor Richie Clendenin. Over 600 people attended this years event which has become the largest academic event outside of graduation exercises by the various schools and the university commencement.

Judy Sakaki, Vice President and Dean of Students, provided an inspirational welcome to this years initiates and their guests. The 1999 University Scholar Award was presented to Dickran Kouymjian, Coordinator of the Armenian Studies Program, and the University Artist Award was presented to Jack Fortner, former department chair and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Music.

Radha Raman, the chapter's nominee for the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship, received a life membership from the national office and a $250 honorarium from the chapter.

Throughout the week the university’s Carillon Bells played the Phi Kappa Phi Centennial March to recognize national Phi Kappa Phi Week, to commemorate the chapter's initiation event held on Tuesday, and to usher in the free noon hour presentations provided to the campus community by the chapter.

1999 University Scholar and Artist Awards
Scholar
Each year chapter 062 selects an individual who, through their scholarly activities, exemplifies the principles of fostering and promoting academic excellence at Fresno State. There are a few truly outstanding individuals on this campus who, through their scholarly endeavors and world renown reputations, have elevated the academic excellence of Fresno State to a higher level. One such individual is Dr. Dickran Kouymjian, professor of Armenian studies.

He is the holder of the Haig and Isabel Berberian Chair of Armenian Studies, one of only a few endowed chairs at our university, and is the director of the Sarkis and Meiline Kalfayan Center for Armenian Studies. Through his endeavors, he constantly strives to maintain our campus as the cultural center of the Armenian community in Fresno. He is respected for his concern for students and their learning and has been called "the best teacher a student could have." His thorough knowledge and understanding of the subjects he teaches, and his enthusiasm and dedication for his classroom and extracurricular activities, have made him a most highly sought after personality who has raised the level of Armenia consciousness at Fresno State, in the community, across the country and around the world.

Dr. Kouymjian’s interest in research is currently devoted to Armenian manuscripts and detailing the history of the Armenian people by deciphering ancient writings. His efforts take him around the world. It is not uncommon to find that he is off to Paris for a semester to continue his studies. Currently, he is in Rome attending the Armenian-Italy Exhibit at the Vatican and to work in the Vatican Library on Armenian Manuscripts. Over the past 22 years he has written some 22 books and scores and scores of scholarly articles in this endeavor.

He was selected as the university’s Outstanding Professor for 1986 and was awarded a Fulbright Senior Lectureship in 1987. In 1996, after 20 years of service to the Armenian Studies Program, Dr. Kouymjian received international honors when separate encyclicals were issued by both His Holiness Karekin I, Catholicos and Supreme Patriarch of all Armenians, and Aram I, Catholicos of Cilician Armenia. That year he was also decorated with the medal of Saints Sahak and Mesrop, the highest honor accorded Armenian scholars and writers, sent by Catholicos Karekin from Holy Etchmiadzin in Armenia. Dr. Kouymjian has also been awarded the Provost’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in Research for 1999, another testament to a most venerable career.

The members of Phi Kappa Phi feel Dr. Kouymjian’s credentials are of the highest quality and he is representative of the top echelon of scholars across the country. We are proud to honor him as the recipient of the 1999 University Scholar Award as a token on our behalf. The award comes with a recognition plaque and a certificate.

Artist
Each year chapter 062 also selects an individual who, through their artistic endeavors, exemplifies the principles of fostering and promoting excellence at Fresno State. Again, there are a few truly outstanding individuals on this campus who, through their artistic creativeness and world renown reputations, have elevated the creative and artistic excellence of Fresno State to a higher level. One such individual is Dr. Jack Fortner, Professor Emeritus of Music.

Dr. Fortner joined the music department at Fresno State in 1970 and retired as Chair in Spring of 1998.  During his tenure, he was also a professor of composition, Director of the Fresno State Electronic Music Studio and conductor of the university's Symphony Orchestra.  He began the study of composition in 1960 at the Julliard School of Music, received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1968, where he was also a conductor and member of the composition faculty from 1966-1970.  In 1978 he founded, and is still the Artistic Director of, Orpheus, a professional chamber music ensemble which is particularly dedicated to the presentation of unusual music from all eras.  He is an internationally know composer of music for concert soloists, string quartets, and symphonic orchestras.  Dr. Fortner's music is published by Theodore Presser Company, Philadelphia and in Europe by Editions Jorbert, Paris.

He has made guest appearances throughout Michigan, Utah, Washington and California during his career, and in fall, 1993, was a guest conductor in Germany and Romania, performing his own music with the renowned Ars Nova Ensemble during the Cluj Musical Autumn. He has also recorded his own Trois Gymnopedics with them and Symphonies with the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Transylvania.  He premiered Symphonies in April, 1997, at the Cluj Moderne Festival in Romania.

These two individuals are representative of the quality found at Fresno State and serve to exemplify what may lie ahead for our outstanding students.

1999 Library Displays
During Phi Kappa Phi Week our chapter presented two library displays. The first display recognized Phi Kappa Phi’s national organization, the role of honor societies and those active on our campus, our chapter, the chapter’s invitation to join, the students who were invited for membership, the chapter’s initiation event, our other activities, and recognition of our members at commencement. The display utilized a rotating format with the various topic materials changing on a regular basis to keep active interest in the display. The display was 4feet wide, 15 inches deep and 5 feet tall.

The second display showcased our campus members who are authors, by displaying their published works. Publications included books, portfolios, monographs, musical scores, and produced recordings on record, tape or CD. This display also showcased our chapter by displaying awards and recognition received by our chapter, including chapter centennial awards and centennial proclamations, chapter charter and banner, and our University Scholar and Artist Award Recipients plaque. The display had four sections, each 4 feet wide, 15 inches deep and 5 feet tall.

Both of these displays will continue through the middle of May.

1999 Spring Presentations
Each year Chapter 062 provides free, one hour presentations to the campus community to showcase faculty that have brought national and international recognition to our campus through their academic and artistic endeavors and provided our students with outstanding educational opportunities. These individuals have helped raise the level of excellence found in the academic programs at Fresno State.

This year our presentations were held during the noon hour in the Wahlberg Recital Hall in the Music Building. On April 22nd, Steven Yarbrough, Professor of English, presented a discussion on his new novel, The Oxygen Man. His discussion focused on the poverty found in the South and provided insights from the time he was raised in Mississippi to the present conditions found there.

On April 27th, Juan Serrano, Professor of music, presented a Flamenco Guitar recital of selected works. Dr. Serrano is recognized as the world's best Flamenco Guitarist and thrilled the audience with his mastery of the guitar.

On April 28th, Victor Hanson, Professor of Classical Studies, presented an eye opening discussion, from his new book The Soul of Battle, entitled "Armies for Freedom: Epaminondas, Sherman, Patton and Their Marches Against Apartheid." The large audience was captivated with his thorough knowledge and his abilities to extrapolate the past to present a look at current events and the future.

Chapter 062 Launches Honor Society Web Site
Chapter 062 has taken the lead in the effort of organizing all honor societies on campus.  An official web site account linked to the university’s home page, which serves as the web site to direct browsers to the listing for the honor societies active on our campus, has been secured. Our chapter serves as the webmaster for this site. The main page of this site serves as the link to the web pages for all honor societies on campus, including Chapter 062’s web site. This web site is currently found under the listings for "Academic Programs" on the university’s home page under the main heading for "Academics."

The Honor Societies web site currently has two pages with 8 external links, 8 internal links and one embedded image.  Neil Kuykendall, our webmaster, completed and published this web page on April 11, 1999, to coincide with Phi Kappa Phi Week. The chapter is in the process of contacting the active honor societies on campus to announce the availability of the site and to offer them assistance in preparing their own individual web sites. The address for this web site is www.csufresno.edu/honorsocieties.

Chapter 062 Launches Chapter Web Site
Chapter 062 also published our own web page on April 11, 1999, to coincide with and recognize Phi Kappa Phi Week.  This is one of the major web sites for the Fresno State campus and contains 24 sub-pages under the main home page. Initially, when our webmaster, Neil Kuykendall, published the site, there were 1003 internal links, 16 external links, 3 embedded images, and 4 mail-to links. The publishing of this site also marks the first web site for an honor society on the Fresno State campus. It is directly linked to the Honor Societies Home Page, also established by our chapter.

The purpose of our site is to promote excellence on our campus and to recognize individuals for the excellence they have achieved for themselves and for our campus. One feature of our site is the presentation of short profiles on our chapter members. We will be continually adding to this page and also updating past profiles. We also use our site to provide other chapters with examples of how we have accomplished our chapter’s revitalization. By using our web site as an example of one way to accomplish objectives, we hope other chapters will find ways to improve their own operations and effectiveness in reaching their goals.

We have included a page for comments, directed through e-mail to our webmaster and for contacting us through various means. We have also utilized a site search feature to search for a particular person, topic or key word.

Chapter 062 Produces Promotional Video
Chapter 062 completed and unveiled our first promotional video for our chapter members during Phi Kappa Phi Week, April 11-April 17. The video was then used for our chapter initiation held on April 20th. The 8 minute video will also be used for future chapter initiation events presented during the honors reception, for our chapter display at national and regional conferences, and during other chapter sponsored public activities.

Candace Egan, our producer, began by filming our 1998 initiation event, our two 1998 lecture presentations, and our 1998 piano rectal presentation. Photocopies of our 1998 library displays and our 1997 and 1998 conference displays, as well as other activities, were assembled. Video and pictures of our campus were also taken. Interviews were filmed in 1998 and 1999, including one with E. Ann Nalley while she was national president. These elements were edited and a narration by our current chapter president, Cleo Bauer, was filmed, edited and incorporated into the video. The production of the video occurred over an eleven-month period.

To date, over 600 people have viewed our new video since its release during Phi Kappa Phi Week. We will be showing this video at our chapter display during the upcoming Western Regional Conference in Portland, Oregon and in a breakout session presentation on revitalizing chapters.

1999 National Phi Kappa Phi Week
National Phi Kappa Phi Week is being celebrated this year from April 11 through April 17.  Each year National Phi Kappa Phi Week celebrates the Society's 100-year legacy of recognizing and encouraging academic excellence in all fields of study in higher education.  The week is designed to call to attention the positive contributions the Society has made through its national and local scholarships and awards programs that have contributed to the support of the education of thousands of university and college students.

California State University, Fresno, Chapter 062, is celebrating this week by launching its comprehensive web site featuring information to inform the general public and prospective members about the Society and Chapter 062; to serve as an example for other chapters in an effort to help them find different, and perhaps better, ways of accomplishing their goals; to publicly recognize the excellence of Chapter 062's members; and to promote academic excellence at Fresno State.  The site address is: www.csufresno.edu/honorsocieties/phi_kappa_phi.

Also to celebrate this week, Chapter 062 has launched the university web site for honor societies active on the Fresno State campus.   This site will serve as the general contact point for reaching the web sites of each of the honor societies active on campus.  One of Chapter 062's goals has been to organize and strengthen the honorary societies active on the Fresno State campus and to link these societies with the newly established Smittcamp Family Honors College.   Chapter 062, acting as the webmaster, will manage the web site and will help other honor societies establish their own pages to publicly promote their chapter activities and their individual societies.  The web site address is: www.csufresno.edu/honorsocieties.   For further information, contact the webmaster by telephone at (559) 278-2977 or by E-mail at neilk@zimmer.csufresno.edu.

To further celebrate this week, Chapter 062 has completed its first promotional video which will be used at all chapter events and at national and regional conferences to promote Chapter 062, its members and Fresno State.   The video includes an interview with E. Ann Nalley, National President at the time of filming, the current chapter president, Cleo Bauer, and several other individuals.   The Phi Kappa Phi Centennial March is featured as the background music and a collage of photographs and video clips are used to present an image of the chapter.   Though debuted for Phi Kappa Phi Week, the video will officially be used for the first time on April 20 during the honor's reception at the chapter's 1999 initiation event.

Chapter 062 also is presenting two displays located in the Henry Madden Library.  The first display, entitled "Promoting Academic Excellence," rotates presentations featuring Phi Kappa Phi and Chapter 062 history; the invitation to students for membership and a listing of those students who are qualified to join; the members of Chapter 062, the purpose of honor societies and the Chapter 062 initiation event; and more about the initiation of members and what activities are to come following this years initiation event.  The second display, entitled "Celebrating The Excellence of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 062," promotes the accomplishments of the authors who are members of the chapter and the chapter's honors and awards.  These displays will be available for viewing during library hours through May 15, 1999.

Phi Kappa Phi 1998 Fellowship Award
On April 30, 1998, at the annual initiation into Membership, Chapter 062 of the national Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi proudly announced that Laura Anne Hall, a senior majoring in Physics, won a National Fellowship Award for 1998. She will receive a $7,000 fellowship to help support her first year of graduate studies. She has been accepted at Cornell University, University of Arizona and the University of New Mexico but has not yet decided on which university to attend. Only 50 of these fellowships were awarded nationally and again demonstrates that students from Fresno State are very competitive on the national level. We of Chapter 062 are proud of Laura’s accomplishments and wish her well.

Applications for the next Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Award competition will be available on November 1, 1998 for seniors planning to enter a graduate or professional program in the Fall of 1999. Contact Diane Majors at 278-2518 for more information.

Phi Kappa Phi 1998 Scholarship Award
Each year Chapter 062 offers a scholarship to deserving student member who contributes to the chapter’s efforts to recognize and promote academic excellence at Fresno State. Student members who wish to become involved with the local chapter should contact Diane Majors at 278-2518.

During the Spring 1998 Phi Kappa Phi Initiation into Membership, held on April 30 in the Satellite Student Union, Hakim Opio Allen was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. His efforts on behalf of the chapter as Vice President and his many valued suggestions contributed to the success of the chapter during the1997-1998 academic year. The scholarship will help him make the transition during his first year of professional studies at the University of Boston School of Law. The chapter executive board is very gratefully to Hakim and wishes him well in his professional pursuits.

Twenty-five graduate students and 168 undergraduate students representing all disciplines at Fresno State were initiated into the Society. To be recognized by the Society, a graduate student must complete their program with distinction representing a minimum of a 3.90 grade point average, while an undergraduate student must have completed a minimum of 90 units of credit with at least a 3.50 grade point average. The chapter, to recognize other individuals who have helped to promote academic excellence at Fresno State, also initiated Stanley M. Ziegler, Associate Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Charles Small, President of the Alumni Association, Katsuyo Howard, Coordinator of the Southeast Asian Student Services, Carloyn Jackson, professor in the Department of Child, Family and Consumer Sciences, Andreas Werz, professor of piano in the Department of Music, Steve Yarbrough, professor in the Department of English, and Rosie Gutierrez, Coordinator of Events for the Office of the President.

The national president of Phi Kappa Phi, E. Ann Nalley, professor in the Department of Physical Sciences at Cameron University in Oklahoma, was there to help recognize the new inductees and to present the University Scholar and Artist Awards. The 1998 University Scholar Award was presented to Victor Hanson, Coordinator of the Classical Studies Program, while the University Artist Award was presented to Juan Serrano, Classical and Flamenco Guitarist in the Department of Music.

Laura Anne Hall, a senior majoring in Physics, received the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship Award of $7,000 and Hakim Opio Allen, a senior in majoring in Philosophy, received the chapter’s scholarship award of $1,000.

Throughout the week the university’s Carillon Bells played the Phi Kappa Phi Centennial March to commemorate the initiation event held on Thursday and to usher in the free noon hour presentations provided to the campus community by the chapter. On Monday, April 27, Robert Levine, professor of Psychology gave a presentation titled, "A geography of Time." On Tuesday, April 28, Eric Hickey, professor of Criminology and world renown crime consultant, gave a presentation titled, "Profiling and Tracking Serial Criminals." On Wednesday, April 29, Andreas Werz, professor of Music and world renown concert pianist, presented a piano recital of selected compositions.

The chapter’s officers for the 1997/1998 academic year were Neil L. Kuykendall, President; Cleo Bauer, President-Elect; Hakim O. Allen, Vice-President; Sandra Griffin, Secretary/Treasurer; and Carolyn Skei, Public Relations Officer.  Following the Initiation, induction of the new chapter officers was held.  The officers for the 1998/1999 academic year are Cleo Bauer, President; Neil Kuykendall, Past President/Historian; Kathleen Vander Meer, President Elect; Denise Schiavone, Vice President, Sandra Griffin, Treasurer; and Carolyn Skei, Public Relations Officer.   Information on the honor society and chapter 062 can be obtained from Neil Kuykendall at 278-2977 or Cleo Bauer at 278-2250.
