Highlights of ICOA Projects
ICOA Projects
In 2008, Fresno State faculty working through ICOA completed a climate change impact assessment for the City of Fresno in response to a City Council request to city staff on what climate change means to Fresno. The link to the final report for this report is listed separately on the ICOA web page. The report is being used by the City to identify and evaluate adaptation and mitigation strategies for sustainable development in Fresno. Papers on this work were presented at the 2009 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting and the 2009 California State University, Chico Sustainability Conference.
In 2008-2009, ICOA partnered with Fresno Metro Ministry under funding from the Fresno Regional Foundation to develop a climate change communication module for underserved groups and communities in the greater Fresno area. The finished work product for this project is a PowerPoint presentation that explains the basics of climate change in easy to understand terms and language. The presentation has been translated into Spanish and Hmong and is routinely used for community meetings on environmental topics.
In 2009 ICOA started working with members of the behavioral analysis community to develop a new initiative in the Association for Behavioral Analysis International (ABAI) organization. In May 2010 ICOA presented a paper as part of a panel on human behavior and environmental problems at the 2010 ABAI Annual Meeting. This panel session triggered creation of a core group of behavior analysts and environmental scientists (tentatively called Behavior Analysis for Sustainable Societies) that links key environmental topics (starting with climate change) to human behavior. The initiative seeks to better understand the human behavior aspects of key environmental problems and how to change the behavior to help solve the problems.
