1999 National Engineering Design Challenge
1999-2000 Problem Statement - "Home is Where I Want to Be"
Design and fabricate a Temporary Shelter
The National Engineering Design Challenge is a hands-on program where high school student teams, with the advice of a teacher-coach and volunteer engineer, design, build and demonstrate a working model of a new product. To increase student interest and social understanding, the projects normally are consumer based and emphasize universal design. Teams compete on a regional level, with local winners advancing to a national competition in Washington, DC. This year's competition will be held in conjunction with National Engineers Week, February 20-26, 2000.
Program Materials and Resources
According to the United Nations, natural disasters kill one million people around the world each year and leave millions more homeless. Since the 1960s, losses from natural disasters have tripled, to over $120 billion. These emergencies precipitate the urgent need for inexpensive, temporary shelters.
With this in mind, your task is to design and fabricate a temporary shelter that should be:
- portable;
- inexpensive;
- set up and disassembled easily;
- expandable to accommodate up to 4 people;
- designed using universal design criteria;
- suitable for a variety of environments.
The team may substitute and/or add functions or features at its discretion. However, the team must be prepared to explain and/or defend those substitutions or additions to the judges. There are no specific penalties or bonuses for substitutions or additions.
In addition, the solution or its component parts must fit through a standard door (32" x 80") and must be able to be set up in a 10' x 10' space in the display area. Solutions cannot be alive or be powered by any living thing other than the operator.
Questions about the NEDC 2000 Problem Statement may be referred to lyoderjets@nae.edu . All relevant questions and their answers will be posted on the JETS homepage.
Specific rules and regulations will be provided in the NEDC 2000 Coaches Manual which is available upon registration.
