More than 20 university students and community volunteers started framing a new house on Saturday, Jan. 23, as a project of University HOPE. The project is a one-bedroom home that will have guard rails and ramps designed specifically for an older adult family or individual.
University HOPE is a volunteer student organization on campus that constructs new homes and rehabilitates existing structures to provide adequate housing for families in need.
"Our last four homes were three-bedroom, two-bath homes designed for families with young children," said Don Romsa, University HOPE board member and Lutheran campus pastor. "This home might be a little different because we are trying to target a specific population with special needs."
Recipients of the homes are required to volunteer at least 200 hours to the project. Romsa said that if the recipients are unable to perform physical work on the home, they can always volunteer in other capacities.
"Anyone physically unable to help with construction can perform other tasks that are just as valuable," said Romsa. "We need people who can make phone calls, solicit donations, write thank you letters and organize volunteers."
Romsa said that time volunteered by friends or family members of the recipient also count toward the 200 hours required.
"By the end of the month the selection process should be completed and a homeowner will be selected," said Romsa. "The home should be finished by the end of the spring semester."
