The new landscaping installed last November on the east and south
sides of the south wing of Madden Library was a joint effort of
the university and the Friends of the Arboretum.
Campus consulting landscape architect Robert Boro contributed the landscaping plans, and a $2,500 grant from the Louis M. Gundelfinger Memorial Fund/Fresno Regional Foundation purchased most of the plant materials. The Library and the Plant Operations Department funded the groundwork.
Incorporated into the landscape design are 24 deciduous magnolia trees, each of a different species, which are part of an extensive collection purchased in 1997 by the Friends and Plant Operations.
"Later this month we are going to plant 11 flats of Japanese spurge and a few additional shrubs," said librarian Christy Hicks Gade, who is also secretary-treasurer of the Friends.
Temporary signs currently identify the magnolia trees but permanent signs will be installed later this spring, thanks to a grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. The Smith Trust grant also provides funds for the printing of a revised Arboretum tree walk guide and tree identification signs for the 112 trees on the "walk." The new tree guide is expected to be available on campus later this spring.
Formed in 1985, the Friends is a community support group for
the campus Arboretum.
