If you've ever had the urge to invest in the stock market or travel to a foreign country but don't know where to start, check out Life+Work+Links.

Funded by the university's Plan for Excellence, Life+Work+Links is a program that offers opportunities for members of the campus community to meet each other while they enjoy a variety of learning-based social events. One-time funding of $23,000 launched LWL.

"We asked campus employees what their interests were, and then directed our program towards those areas," said Andrew Hoff, coordinator of the Recreation Administration and Leisure Studies Program as well as one of the coordinators of LWL. "The purpose of the program is to offer additional opportunities for campus employees to interact and get to know each other."

Activities fall under three categories: professional growth (seminars in topics such as time management, communication skills development, stress management, and professional development); learning activities (fitness walking/running, aerobics, bicycling, golf, theater, music, cooking, photography, and travel); and special events.

So far those who attended Life+Work+Links seem pleased with the program, said Hoff.

March 9 the program offered a presentation on unique and interesting destinations in California by Stan Norsworthy, professor of geography.

"It was informative, well-presented, and organized," said Darlene Kincaid-Young (Ag One). "One woman talked about traveling on Amtrak with her grandchildren and gave me a travel idea I definitely intend to use."

Cleo Bauer (Athletics Academic Services) added, "The best thing about the session was that it provided a chance to meet other people from campus with similar interests."

March 16 shutter bugs learned how to take interesting travel pictures. Tips from Richard Haas, professor emeritus of biology, were geared for both the beginning and the advanced photographer.

"I enjoyed listening to Dr. Haas tell us how to make marvelous photography happen," said Dr. Susan Harris, professor of education (CTET). "Plans are being made for a follow-up session which will allow people to talk informally about their experiences with photography."

To support LWL, two professional training facilities on campus were outfitted with special equipment for workshops and seminars. One meeting room is located in the Plant Operations conference room and the other is located in the California Agricultural Technology Institute (CATI) complex.

The LWL program provides a list of on-campus contacts who can supply information on various activities, including fantasy sports, Frisbee, crafts, Christian fellowship, and motorcycle touring. Upcoming events include a gala evening of entertainment March 24 at Roger Rocka's and a campuswide car and boat show May 7 at O'Neill Park.
