Health Fair '99, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Residence Dining Facility on Tuesday, will offer students, faculty and staff everything from free bicycle tune-ups to stress screening.
Sam Gitchel, health educator in University Health and Psychological Services, said that participants will be able to browse the many booths inside the dining hall, as well as enjoy recreational activities outside. The campus ropes course, staffed by the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department, will be open to passersby. Tri-Sport Cycle shop will offer free bike tune-ups, and the Fresno County Human Services System's mobile testing vehicle will provide HIV antibody testing at no charge. Other activities and services are also free of charge, and numerous prizes will be given away.
Twenty of the displays have been developed by teams of Fresno State students with faculty supervision. Drs. Jerry Davoli (Health Science) and Kathleen Curtis (Physical Therapy) have been particularly active in promoting class projects among their students, Gitchel said. Other departments that have promoted student involvement are Nursing, Dietetics, and Recreation Administration and Leisure Studies.
Gitchel said the Health Fair provides students and others in the campus community a fun and interactive way to learn about health. Faculty are invited to bring their classes. The event is sponsored by University Health and Psychological Services, Associated Students Inc. and University Food Services with the active support of many individuals, groups and community organizations.
