Vision for the 21st Century: A Plan for Excellence

Release time available for community service

In March 1998, the university established a policy that supports release time for employees who wish to volunteer their time for service to the community. This policy was established in recognition of the valuable skills and experience that members of our campus community have to offer to the surrounding community. In addition, this policy is consistent with our university vision, which states that:

California State University, Fresno aspires to be the premier regional interactive university in the state and one of the best in the nation.

This policy and the university's planning efforts emphasize the need for California State University, Fresno to serve the community in meaningful ways that are consistent with our mission. In order to realize this goal, employees may be released to volunteer up to 40 hours per calendar year for community service, providing that the volunteer project receives university approval and that employees match the compensated time with their own personal time. This policy is consistent with Executive Order W-132-96, which allows for state employees to respond to local needs beyond regular job responsibilities.
